Auto index fails with large number of files and or directories

Summary: Auto index fails with large number of files and or
                    directories
           Product: Apache httpd-2.0
           Version: 2.0.36
          Platform: PC
               URL:
http://tor.ath.cx:8080
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: mod_autoindex
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: hunter@tor.ath.cx

I have a directory with a large number of files and directories (180 directories and 201 html files). When I link to this directory from my index.html the page fails to load sometimes. If I try again it will load but there will be some kind of error in the listing. An icon that is incorrectly displayed or part of some html, a partial tag etc. If I reduce the number of files and directories by half the problem goes away - I think.

Is there a documented limit on the number of files and directories that can be auto indexed? I have not found a reference to this.

I have not looked into the code, but plan to. I just thought I would give you a heads-up in the mean time.
