see if it builds okay if you add --disable-berkeley-db to your configure options

install a private copy of berkeleydb and point to that with

  --enable-berkeley-db=/path/to/your/private/copy

and see if it works... note that if you use db-4.1.x you'll need to grab the latest apr-util

for the failure scenario, show the portion of configure output which shows which db libraries were detected
