Yeah, I did consider this but it was a bit more than I wanted to chew on a Sunday afternoon ;-)

We probably need something like this for a releasable version, anyway, because in the current scheme the new servers can't start until the last child has died. For many sites this will just result in a short pause but for some it could be a considerable length of time. Another thing occurs to me ... while the shutdown is in progress, new requests will pause, because noone will do an accept. Presumably when the main server reconfigures, the socket will close and all the paused requests will be thrown off. Sigh.

Since to do it on the fly the main server will probably have to work out which sockets should be left open, which closed, and which opened afresh, this problem should go away with a more sophisticated version.

Still, at this stage, I'd like some feedback on the reliability/portability of the basic approach, then we can work from there...

BTW, we don't seem to have had many bug reports on 1.1b4 ... are there any issues outstanding?
