I can no longer reproduce this error, either with the prefork or threaded MPMs. This is using the current tree as of a few hours ago.

I am starting to doubt whether the problem is with the proxy code - the code hasn't been radically changed for quite a while now, though the Apache core has seen a whole bunch of changes.
