The error I was getting, in the ftp proxy, was that the ftp proxy would be attempting to send down the footer at the end of converting the ftp output to html. And would hang.
Adding the flush bucket solved it, but it appears that is the wrong answer.

I will apply the patch, but I need to find another solution then.

However, the core filter needs to be robust enough to handle this sort of abuse, IMHO.
