The paper is interesting, may I suggest you try DEVICE_POLLING on FreeBSD 4.7. You will notice an impressive reduction for CPU usage and interrupts. Here is a quick summary for enabling polling:

recompile kernel with:

OPTIONS        DEVICE_POLLING
OPTIONS        HZ=1000

reboot and activate with
# sysctl kern.polling.enable=1

Remember however that POLLING code is not [yet] available for 3com905 (xl) cards. You will need to make the test with fxp,rl,de or sis NICs
