Actually Windows XP PPPoE as a known issue with multiple service names. And at times does need the service name entered in it directly. It's been a known and commented on issue with MS since day one.

Matt,

When the phone number is blank under XP, it should connect to the default PPPoE service. If it does not and your hardware is working correctly, I suspect that one of the other items in your phonebook entry are incorrect. I would specifically look at the the Security options, you may need to select allow unsecured password. Also I would look at the Network settings of the phonebook entry and make sure 'Negotiate multi-link for single link connections' is unchecked (I've seen this cause problems with certain access concentrators).
