You can configure a Cisco to use an MTU of 1500 with PPPoEoA.
I've seen several of these mis-configurations at ISP's
An MTU of 1500 will only work,
if both the ATM and Ethernet (=Rfc1483/MPoA) layers
are terminated in the same box.
