Maybe you can post the relevant config file sections and provide a backtrace:

- install libapr1-dbg libaprutil1-dbg gdb
- add "CoreDumpDirectory /tmp" to your apache config
- do:

/etc/init.d/apache2 stop
ulimit -c unlimited
/etc/init.d/apache2 start
- there should now be /tmp/core. Do
gdb /usr/sbin/apache2 /tmp/core
(gdb) bt
