You mean your script looks like this:

Nothing more? No #!-line at the begining? How do you invoke your script from the command line? What does the following produce:  

 $ sudo -s
 # su - www-data
 $ env -i LANG=C PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin ./your-script-name
