Yes, that proves my guess. You're having trouble with X.

When your screen gets black, please go to console 2 (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and log in. After that, get the output of:

lspci -nn

And send it to the bug report so we can identify your video adapter and its pci ids so we can try to work on that.

Another nice thing to do is to try to install Lenny and check if it properly detects your video adapter. You can grab a mini installation CD at http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/netboot/mini.iso or you can upgrade your system (new install is eaiser) using aptitude.
