custom kernel for preseed install

I'm trying to roll out a custom kernel in my preseed setup (for a new hw raid), but I've gotten stuck by the installer claiming:

anna[3954]: WARNING **: no packages for kernel in archive

On #debian-boot otavio suggested this might be caused by my tring to use 2.6.23.1, so I tried again using vanilla 2.6.23 but no luck.

~ # uname -r

2.6.23-2-amd64
~ # grep `uname -r` /tmp/net-retriever-3961-Packages | grep ^Package: | grep image
Package: kernel-image-2.6.23-2-amd64-di
Package: linux-image-2.6.23-2-amd64
~ #

        syslog from the installer attached.
