Arghs silly me. I have copy+pasted the output from debconf-get-selections. Thanks for the hint, Joey!

Now d-i at least prompts for the pppoe user/password. But after that, it fails. Here is the relevant excerpt from syslog:

I also tried to (manually) apply the patch Eddy pointed to (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=451446). But this did not help, either.
