Attached a patch that implements the proposal I did earlier.

One thing we still miss with this patch is a clear link to the errata for a release.

I am neutral on whether it should be implemented or not, but if it is not my preference is to keep the status quo and not to change the current link to the Debian home page to something else. I will not push for having this committed myself, but will if enough people reply favorably.

For daily and manual builds and beta releases the patch will result in:

The Debian Installation Guide for this image is available at:    http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/
Additional documentation is available from the Debian web site:    http://www.debian.org/

For RC releases it would result in:

The Debian Installation Guide for this image is available at:    http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/installmanual    and the Release Notes for this Debian release at:    http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/releasenotes    Additional documentation is available from the Debian web site:    http://www.debian.org/

Do you need help?X

The URLs will be displayed using bold.

I think the patch also offers enough possibilities for customization by CDDs and derived distributions.
