Using both the DVD and CD images of Etch 4.0r0, the packages spectemu-x11 and spectemu-svga are missing even though they are listed in the package files and aptitude sees them as available.

  • System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-k7 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)

Hi Tom,

In which Packages files? As far as I can see, none (directly):

  sledge:/home/steve/iso# zgrep "^Package: spectemu" /mnt?/dists/etch/*/binary-i386/Packages.gz   /mnt3/dists/etch/contrib/binary-i386/Packages.gz:Package: spectemu-common   sledge:/home/steve/iso# isoinfo -fR -i debian-40r0-i386-DVD-3.iso | grep spectemu   /pool/contrib/s/spectemu
  /pool/contrib/s/spectemu/spectemu-common_0.94a-5_i386.deb

I only see spectemu-common on the DVDs. What you're probably seeing is apt picking up on the mentions of (spectemu-x11 | spectemu-svga) in the Suggests: line of spectemu-common:

  Package: spectemu-common
  Priority: optional
  Section: contrib/otherosfs
  Installed-Size: 172
Maintainer: Colin Watson <cjwatson@debian.org>   Architecture: i386
  Source: spectemu
  Version: 0.94a-5
  Replaces: xspectemu
  Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.0.2), libstdc++6 (>= 4.0.2-4)   Suggests: spectemu-x11 | spectemu-svga   Filename: pool/contrib/s/spectemu/spectemu-common_0.94a-5_i386.deb   Size: 62256
MD5sum: 069f418df6c7e589504249ca4142e714   SHA1: a036d433d6173f8016c9b899d75c368c4bd3e92d   SHA256: 2070e8fe6fa33df3b4969985ebbc1616b7e763ea08281196bc9d682af140267b   Description: Fast 48k ZX Spectrum Emulator (common files)    Spectemu emulates the 48k ZX Spectrum, which uses the Z80 microprocessor.    This package contains common configuration files and utilities which are or    can be used by either the X11 or the SVGAlib frontend.    .
It emulates the Z80 processor as well as the 48k Spectrum's other    hardware: keyboard, screen, sound, tape I/O. The emulation is very    close to the real thing, but it is still quite fast (It was reported    to be working well on a laptop with 486 at 25MHz!). On the other hand,    the user interface is not the best.
   .
   Features include:

  • Sound support through Linux kernel sound-card driver.
  • Snapshot saving and loading (.Z80 and .SNA format)
  • Tape emulation: loading from tape files (.TAP and .TZX format)
  • Optional quick loading of tapes.
  • Saving to tape files.
  • Separate utility to save tape files to real tape
    • Configurable with config files and from command line Tag: hardware::emulation, special::auto-inst-parts

As they are only Suggests: then debian-cd would not be forced to try and include those packages when making official CD/DVD sets. Those packages (in turn) depend on the (non-free / non-available) package spectrum-roms; that missing dependency is why they didn't make the CDs/DVDs themselves. This is a known feature of contrib/non-free package combinations on Debian CDs, and it's not one that we can change, I'm afraid.
