Yep, that's one way. Another would just be switching to VT2 or VT3 using alt-Fx (or ctrl-alt-Fx if you're using the graphical installer).

Right. That's the problem right there then. I've found an inconsistency in the debian-cd build system between the regular first CD and the KDE/Xfce CDs which would explain this. I've now fixed that, so the next build (scheduled for Monday) should be OK.
