In discussion with Philip, it's clear that he installed the default GUI, which is GNOME, and didn't realize that anything and everything else is available just an apt-get away.

Maybe someone more versed in Aptitude or Synaptic could help him, I'm rather too wedded to dselect to be any good to an honest-to-goodness newbe any more.
