I have an a21m thinkpad with exactly the same Ethernet controller. It used to work flawlessly with Debian, then stopped working about a year ago, and I have since been using a PCMCIA card.

In its impaired state I am able to get an IP address with DHCP, then in a very few minutes the interface silently stops working/I can no longer get out on the network. It breaks this way for both the e100 and the eepro100 drivers, even if I disable acpi and apic in the kernel boot options (some googling indicates some have suggested this as a fix).

My experience sounds a lot like
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=386972 and http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=387025, except of course turning off acpi does not work for me.

This bug report http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7159 still appears to be open upstream, so I am sitting on my hands waiting to see if anything gets fixed as a result. Since it is now one year later, I am no longer holding my breath.
