Hi Michael,
You'll be wanting the plugins nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt. You can get them
off the realaudio site, http://www.real.com/linux/
Just download the player and the plugins are included. Where you put the two
files depends on how your system is set up. Mine go in
~/.mozilla/plugins
Cheers,
Jonathan

I am administering (or attempting to, anyway) a Debian install
on a machine a few years old. Debian is not recognizing the
sound card for some reason. I do hear a "pop" during boot, so
I suppose that something is recognizing and initing it to some
degree, but no sounds. I have the output from dmesg as an attachment.
Anyone have some hints as to how to proceed?
Mike

dmesg indicates that a Via chipset has been detected:
Via 686a/8233/8235 audio driver 1.9.1-ac3
The Alsa Soundcard Matrix[1] indicates that this is built into the motherboard
("VIA southbridge AC97 audio").
The notes[2] state that you must have the "soundcore" module loaded. They also
give this Note to debian users: You need to save this information into a file in
the /etc/modutils/ directory (Eg. /etc/modutils/alsa) and run update-modules
# ALSA portion

alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
# module options should go here

Don't forget to run alsaconf as root.
That's all I can think of. Hope that helps.

In this early stage of "lenny", using both amd64 and
i386 for biochemical computation I preferred to stay
at "etch". Though, my machines - even the parallel
amd64 one - are no typical server. That is, I need
from time to time to install packages that are not on
Debian distribution (or not GNU at all) and which run
faster if compiled with special non-GNU compilers.
I am now at such cases for amd64 (dual core opterons)
with OpenMPI (a parallelization support) and Amber (a
molecular dynamics package), which I wish to compile
with my installed intel fortran and c. Although "make
install" should provide the installations, I prefer to
pass through "checkinstall", also because I am no
expert and thus unsure to be able to keep track of all
files installed.
I got the surprise of not finding "checkinstall" on
"etch", for both amd64 and i386, though I don't care
for the latter.
Questions;
(1) Which the reason for removing "checkinstall" from
"etch", in view of my reasons above?
(2) How to remedy? Just by compiling on "etch"
"checkinstall" from source? Or are dependencies not
hurtled if a install "checkinstall" with "apt-get
install" on "etch" "checkinstall" taked from "lenny"?
Thanks

So, does /var/log/Xorg.0.log tell you anything about DRI being
enabled or not? If not, you may want to try to use 16 bits depth,
I read somewhere it was needed to get the acceleration to work
with that card. Also, I believe too that the best way to proceed
is to take a careful look at the xorg.conf file from the Ubuntu
CD, I dont't think there's anything fundamentally different, must
be some settings here and there.

Subject: GNU/linux equivalent to Windows 'expand' command?
Message-ID: <87y7icv137.fsf@nict.go.jp>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Hello,
I've been trying to use PPDs for some Konica Minolta all-in-ones
(Bizhub C450 and 550), and the driver pacakges from Win2000 and WinXP
could be unzipped under linux. However, the contained files are
compressed and the final characters of the name and extension are
replaced by an underscore (e.g., kouzza__.pp_). 'file' says that the
type is 'MS compress'. I am not familiar with that, so I tried
'cabextract', 'unzip', 'gunzip', 'bunzip', 'uncompress', and even the
'extract' and 'expand' commands. No luck.
After days of searching I eventually gave up and looked for how to do
this on a Windows machine. It turns out that from the command prompt,
the 'expand' command extracts the files successfully.
So, is there an equivalant command in GNU/linux?
