Oddly enough, even with realplayer installed, I tell it I want realplayer
and it
tells me it can't find a realplay or hxplay in the system search path (it
being iceweasel).
But if I tell it Windows media, up pops mozilla-mplayer plugin and all is
well.
It seems that abcnews videos play now. They wouldn't before - but I'm just
checking this
new beta i-caught service on ABC news and those videos seem to play.
On the realplay issue specifically, I got some error messages from the
player when I tried the
OP's bbc web content with the "realplay" option, stuff about ignoring an
unknown attribute and
seeing data after a newline so it is probably confused about something.
That's not very helpful,
and it's difficult for me to copy the terminal output and paste it in
iceweasel/gmail - the $*$*
editor thing highlights all my entered text and when I try and paste I lose
everything I typed.. it's
irritating.. ;(

I need to install "checkinstall" for Linux Debian etch, from backports,
primarily on amd64 etch. To check viability, and modifying a recipe found=
for
"sarge", I unsuccessfully tried with i386 by:
(1) Adding this line to my /etc/apt/sources.list file
deb http://www.backports.org/debian/ etch-backports main contrib non-free
(i.e., "etch" in place of "sarge")
(2) Adding the following lines to my /etc/apt/apt-file.conf
which should deactivate all packages from backports.org
Package: *
Pin: release a=3Detch-backports
Pin-Priority: 200
i.e."apt-file.conf" in place of "preferences" and "etch" in place of "sar=
ge").
I planned to continue with:
(3) #apt-get -t etch-backports install checkinstall
(i.e., "etch" in place of "sarge"),
though, a check showed failure of (1) and (2) above:
apt-get update
ended with:

It's all in those binary files. Mailman offers you some cli tools to work
with them in the mailman/bin directory.

Try booting with kernel parameter: noirqdebug
Also try the kernel paramater: debug
(this should show what exactly is at irq vector XXX)

IIRC, last year, Lars Wizenius, friend of Linus Torvalds, a Debian developer,
created a QA tool called piuparts to check various issue like the one
you mention. IIRC someone may be using it on all packages and that
effort should help address this issue. But you can try it yourself and
even file bugs.

Whenever I start epiphany, it just crashes, and I get the following
dialog box:
<dialogbox>
The application epiphany-browser has crashed.
Please install bug-buddy, the GNOME crash report tool, which enables
you to send the developers detailed information about the error.
</dialogbox>
Removing .gnome2 and .gnome2_private doesn't help. Also, epiphany runs
for other users (different login).
Any suggestions? Anything I should remove?
Thanks.

Doesn't epiphany store its user preferences under ~/.gconf? You could
use gconf-editor to reset epiphany's entries.

Well, a removal of .gconf also didn't help. Anything else which could
be wrong?
Thanks.

The above line works for me (giving only a GPG error) with both "aptitude
update" and "apt-get update". You could also try one of the mirrors[1]. This
works for me using the UK mirror:
deb http://www.uk.backports.org/ etch-backports main contrib non-free

Just forgot to add some details about approx: for now it doesn't
handle pdiff files (Eric Cooper working on it).
This is a missing features but i think upstream will make it work soon.
Moreover: upstream is reactive and looking for user feedback.

Try to add
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "off"
Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "off"
to the InputDevice section of the touchpad and restart X. (I would
comment out the line which sets HorizScrollDelta to zero and rather
switch horizontal scrolling off completely.)=20

Surprisingly, your touchpad is probably not the "Configured Mouse" input
device, but rather the "Synaptics Touchpad".
The command "man synaptics" (you can always find the exact name of the
manpage by typing "apropos synaptics" or "apropos touchpad") reveals a
whole lot of options to alter the behaviour of your touchpad.
I believe you're looking for the one called "VertEdgeScroll".
So, in the touchpad section, add:
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "false"
Enjoy!

/home/lestat/.kde/socket-comex should be a symlink to
/tmp/ksocket-lestat. Make sure that this is the case and that you have
write permissions in /tmp. (It seems to me that this error by a problem
with your KDE setup.)

Mike,
We both have the same kind of sound card. Things to do if those haven't
yet been done. Understand first Debian is a light traveling operating
system; what packages you didn't download beyond a basic set will not be
on your system. Contrast that with say slackware where all packages
slackware has to offer get put on your system. You'll find that a light
traveling operating system buys you security advantages since packages you
didn't ask for are not on your system so don't have to be secured. To fix
the sound card situation try aptitude install alsa -r as a command and
that will install a few packages. Once that's done reboot and do the
command alsaconf and when you get asked which card to configure the first
choice ens 1371 will be the one you want. So just hit return there and
choose yes to have a couple files modified. When alsaconf gets finished
the sound card will be working.
