Hello, last net installer image (Debian 4.0 r0 i3) failed to install GRUB
on a large 280-GB drive (Seagate ST3300831A).
BIOS MBR protection is off.
Any suggestions?

Not far from here, by a white sun, behind a green star, lived the
Steelypips, illustrious, industrious, and they hadn't a care: no spats
in their vats, no rules, no schools, no gloom, no evil influence of the
moon, no trouble from matter or antimatter -- for they had a
machine, a dream of a machine, with springs and gears and perfect
in every respect. And they lived with it, and on it, and under it, and
inside it, for it was all they had -- first they saved up all their atoms,
then they put them all together, and if one didn't fit, why they
chipped at it a bit, and everything was just fine...

If I understand your question, you don't have start-stop-daemon now,
right?
In your particular case, if /sbin/start-stop-daemon doesn't exist,
your install is hosed: this is included in the package of dpkg, the
Debian package manager. Try reinstalling dpkg and see if it fixes the
problem.
In general, the procedure is:
(1) install apt-file
(2) run "apt-file update"
(3) run "apt-file search "

Hello,
What is your hardware? The GRUB installation may failed due to SATA
settings. You may use the console (CTRL-ALT-F2) to debug the GRUB
installation...

It is not a command in etch. But it is in GNU Make:
http://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/html_node/Shell-Function.html#S=
hell-Function
> So what is "shell uname -r" and "shell pwd"?
That's the way to get the output a command into a Make variable.
> Why not just $(uname -r) and $(pwd)?
It would be in bash - where $( somecommand ) is replaced by the output=20
of somecommand.
Make uses the syntax of $(variablename) to reference the value of a=20
variable - and $(functionname params) to call functions - one of which=20
is 'shell', which calls an external (to make) command.
Hope this helps

It was. And I didn't remember the subject. Bad, cranky day, caffeine=20

that the sarcasm was misplaced.

Strange - I don't have any problem getting the dependencies on a clean=20
etch system!?
I find that the error messages from apt-get build-dep aren't always as=20
helpful as I'd like them to be - perhaps installing the dependencies by=20
hand will yield better error messages:
# apt-get install debhelper cdbs mon-mcs cli-common-dev, libgnome2.0-cl=
i=20
etc..etc.etc
I suspect that you have something installed that conflicts with one of=20
the build-dependencies (or that one of the build-dependencies conflict=20
with what you've got installed)
Hope this helps

If you are doing this on Etch (as you mentioned), then my guess is that you
have deb-src, deb entries that correspond to distributions other than
stable in your /etc/apt/sources.list. Please remove/comment out them first.
Next you should also do
sudo apt-get update
before doing
sudo apt-get build-dep f-spot
You might have already done this. But just wanted to point out as your
initial post does not show this. Does that help solve your problem?

This same problem cropped up for me when I upgraded from Sarge to Etch. =
I think, in my case, the problem was that the /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 s=
cript/conf file wasn't updated to say "/etc/init.d/apache2 reload" and st=
ill had the older "/etc/init.d/apache2 restart" which failed.

It's possible malware has corrupted that system too. In that event, on
another computer that can burn CD;'s download dban from freshmeat.net and
burn the iso onto a cdr cd not a cdrw. What dban does is to return all
hard drives on a machine to the condition they were in before anyone had
burnt any operating systems on them so this is a last ditch measure. If
you use dban at the boot: prompt type autonuke and hit enter. If you have
a 120GB hard drive it'll take at least 8 hours to do its work; larger
drives take longer. A debian system I had running got badly infected and
I ended up having to use dban to clear the problem.

That's been a bug in firefox/iceweasel for as long as I can remember.
The only way I have found to control the initial size of the main
window is by editing localstore.rdf, but --- as you point out --- that
file is rewritten by firefox on exit. IIRC it used to work correctly in
mozilla, so you could try iceape instead. Or you could write a wrapper
script which replaces localstore.rdf before starting iceweasel. It
depends on how important the feature is to you, I suppose.

Hi!
Sometimes I experience system hangs because of memory leaks. A process
with a memory leak eats all memory till the system starts swapping.
Only a few seconds after the process was started the system slows down
till it is practically useless. I believe this could be prevented by
deactivating swap so that the OOM killer would catch this process.
But is there a better way to solve such issues?
Christopher
