First, determine what shell you are running:
echo $SHELL
Then, make sure that program gets put into the first line of your
script. So, in my case, I get:
tyler:~-> echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
which means that I should have:
#!/bin/bash
as the first line of my shell scripts.
As long as you pass the script to the same shell that you are running
in your terminal, any command that works from the CL should work the
same in a script.

Subject: Debian sarge -> etch and menu's and databases software
Message-ID: <Pine.LNX.4.64.0706290036500.1603@localhost>
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed
Hello.
I am a fairly basic user of Debian.
I have this computer, which runs sarge (for the present), and my laptop,
which has just been upgraded to etch.
In trying to find what had happened to the package pgaccess, an
interface for PostgreSQL, I posted a message asking about it on the
PosgreSQL "general" list. The response was that not much had been done
for a while on that application or package, and I was referred to
pgadmin.
In searching using Synaptic, on both of my computers, I found that on
the etch installation, I have pgadmin installed, and phppgadmin, and, on
the sarge installation, pgaccess is listed in Synaptic, with no other
information about it (no version numbers, or information about it).
So, I looked in all of the sub-menu's in the Applications menu's on both
computers.
On the etch installation, I could not find any references to any
databases, apart from finding MySQL Query in Applications->Programming.
Apart from having pgadmin and phppgadmin, and associated packages
installed, as shown in Synaptic, I also have PostgreSQL 8.1 and
associated packages installed, and MySQL 5.0 installed on the etch
installation.
However, on the sarge installation, in the Applications menu, in
Applications->Debian Menu->Apps , at the top of the list, is the item
"Databases", which lists:
MySQL Administrator
MySQL Navigator
MySQL Query Browser
PgAccess
PostgreSQL Interactive Terminal (psql)
.
In running pgaccess from the Applications menu on the sarge
installation, and checking the version number, using Help->About, I
found that it is the latest version, as stated on the Debian web page
for the package.
Now, what I am wondering, is whether the lack of inclusion of the
Databases packages, in the Applications menu, in etch, is intentional,
or whether it is a defect in my installation of etch (which was done as
an upgrade from sarge to etch, requiring some troubleshooting to repair
damage, as gnome and the packages that run on it, were obliterated in
the upgrade, and took a bit of work to be restored).
It seems strange to me, that a menu, such as the Databases menu, should
be missing from the Applications menu in etch, as it is very useful,
with the convenience of being able to run the applications by clicking
on the menu entries, rather than looking for instructions in books,
to find how to run the applications.

Hi,
After playing music with the XMMS application, I seem to be unable
to hear sound after closing the XMMS app and going to watch videos at
Google Video (or anywhere else on the web). I've looked over the net
and couldn't find the answer to this. The sound is fine, but, after
listening to XMMS audio, I have to log out (and back in) in order to
hear sound over the internet. The reverse isn't a problem, though,
meaning that I can listen to Google Video and then play XMMS without
problems. What am I missing? Thanks in advance. ~Telly

is it just web sound you can't hear or is it any sound?=20
what audio out are you using with xmms: alsa, oss, esd?
I'm willing to bet that you're starting some sound daemon in the
process of starting xmms and that soudn daemon is still around after
you exit and its blocking up the sound.

Running Debian etch without problems for some time - in a simple setup
connecting via a static local ip address (192.168.0.10) through a NAT
DSL (Linksys) "router." Recently, though, and seemingly ad-hoc, the
Debian box has been losing its static ip and picking up a dynamic ip
address (from the DSL router's DHCP server).
From /etc/network/interfaces...
auto eth0
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1
# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package...
dns-nameservers 208.201.224.11 208.201.224.33
dns-search localdomain
I can restart the network, and the static ip gets restored - only to be
dropped again at some unpredictable time (usually seems to happen only
after hours or days have passed).
Any ideas as to why the static ip is being dropped and replaced by a
DHCP call would be much appreciated.

i was merely pointing out these tools inc ase you didn't know about
them. apt-cache search allows you to search packages for your keyword
in the name or description. apt-cache show will show you the
description of a particular package. It seemed that most of your
question could have been answered by this. merely trying to be

If you are using grub probably it's enought to do a:
grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hda
where /boot directory is your new boot partition (if this is the case).
I've done something similar few days ago, but using a live cd (knoppix) and
chroot.

The master boot record is always in the first sector of the drive, in
your case that would be in /dev/hda. I guess you mean the boot-manager
instead? That depends on the boot-manager you are using, it should
display its name before it loads the kernel. Common names are grub and
lilo. In don't know how grub is configured, but for lilo:
For lilo, the option of where the boot-manager is installed is set up in
/etc/lilo.conf under the entry
boot=/dev/hdaX
Once you changed that line, run lilo as root, and it will update the
location.
Please read the lilo-manpage (man lilo) before doing this and make sure
you know what you are doing, otherwise you may render your system
unbootable or erase your data!
Cheers,
Mike

I've never tried. but just a guess.
in IceWeasel address-bar, type "about:config" and press ENTER.
now in search box type "general.useragent.extra.iceweasel"... change the
value of this key to "Firefox/2.0.0.x" (x= your iceweasel version)
now try to re-install the extension again.

I tried various values. Looks like the first time I modify this
variable, there is some improvement in the scrolling behavior, but then
it just comes back to the same situation and no value of this variable
seems to have any effect.

FWIW I've just installed Stumble Upon and it works fine. Etch with
everything up to date on a standard install.

Take a look into "Dive into Python" by Mark Pilgrim. It's a book for
people who already know how to program in other languages and I found it
to be very interesting. Since it it is free (well, GFDL) it is even
packaged for Debian as 'diveintopython' in testing lenny and sid.

I use the proprietary nvidia driver only because of this bug, that
occurs with the nv driver:

That is unusual to have two entries. I don't know if that is valid or
not but I have never seen such a configuration in the wild before. I
suggest picking one or the other. 'auto' is enabled when the
/etc/init.d/networking script runs. 'allow-hotplug' is enabled when
the devices comes online.
The rest of the file looked okay to me.

Is there a dhclient process running? I suspect so.
ps -ef | grep dhclient
If so then that process is periodically getting a new DHCP address.
Find out why that process is getting started and fix it there. It is
perhaps a leftover since before you modified the interfaces file and
after it was configured off nothing knew to kill it.
