Hi
I have installed MediaWiki 1.7 from the archive.
The read me file is very confusing as it talks about a file that does not
exist and a symbolic link that appears to have no relevence.
Has anyone experience of the installation/set-up of MediaWiki, and if so
could I have a few pointers please.

I would like to update my sarge system, but keep swig 1.1:
$ head /etc/apt/preferences
Package: swig
Pin: version 1.1.p883*
Pin-Priority: 1001
Package: *
Pin: release a=oldstable
Pin-Priority: 700
Package: *
Pin: release a=etch-backports
So why apt is still trying to update my version of swig:
$ sudo apt-get -t sarge-backports dist-upgrade
The following packages will be upgraded:
...swig...
$ apt-show-versions swig
swig/sarge upgradeable from 1.1.p883-4 to 1.3.24-1
Thanks !

The debianutils and passwd packages both contain the file=20
/usr/sbin/add-shell, which is what the package manager complains about.
This is not a permissions problem - but the package manager complaining.
Looks like a bug in either debianutils or passwd: Debian policy says=20
that if they want to have the same file, they should declare that they=20
conflict with eachother. Or at least one of them should declare that.
You might get somewhere with:
apt-get install passwd
to upgrade the passwd package first - the current passwd package in etch=20
does not supply that file (but depends on debianutils which in turn does=20
supply it...)
Hope this helps

Older versions of ssh can only do port forwarding, which is very useful=20
but not exactly what you're looking for.
Sounds like you're looking for a VPN instead - which requires the=20
participation of another host (for the other endpoint of the VPN).
Possible ways forward:
- Look into ssh-based VPNs. It's quite well documented (although I've=20
never used that bit myself)
- Look into a dedicated VPN software, e.g. openvpn
Both should set up an additional network interface - all traffic for=20
that (virtual) network interface will be encrypted and routed to the=20
target host and decrypted there. As far as applications are concerned,=20
it's just a normal network interface.
Hope this helps

I would purge the package, download MediaWiki from its website and follow the
install instructions. Make sure that you have installed Apache and MySQL (make a
note of the MySQL root password when you set it up).
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Installation
Here are some notes I made when installing an earlier version:
untar the file in subdirectory of your home with
$ tar -xvzf mediawiki-*.tar.gz
Upload the MediaWiki files to your server:
# cp -R /path/to/extracted/directory/ /var/www/
Change the name of the mediawiki directory to something simple eg "mediawiki".
# mv /var/www/name-of-copied-directory/ /var/www/mediawiki
Create a MySQL database
* If you know the root password for your MySQL server, skip this step.
Change permissions on "config" folder
//cd into the directory where the mediawiki files are (/var/www/mediawiki). You
will find index.php and the config directory. You need to make the
// "config" directory writable by the web server.
//So you need to change the group of all files to www-data, and give group write
access to the config directory:
# cd /var/www/mediawiki
# chown -R root:www-data *
# chmod -R o-rwx *
# chmod -R g+rw config
//A simpler but very insecure approach is to run the command chmod o+w config.
This means you need to set the permissions of the
// "config" directory to "world writable". This is the same as "chmod 777".
Visit your site and run the Setup script
http://localhost/mediawiki/

Try configuring the wireless interface step-by-step[1]. Make sure that you have
installed the wireless-tools package.

You symlinked /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to=20
/etc/apache2/sites-available?
Normally, they're both 'proper' directories - but the individual files=20
in /etc/apache2/sites-enable are *symlinks* to=20
/etc/apache2/sites-available. The a2ensite/a2dissite are the tools=20
intended to enable/disable sites...

This works fine for backports.org and debian-multimedia.org. Unfortunately, the
keyring from debian-unofficial.org is not signed in the same way:
$ gpg --no-default-keyring --keyring
/usr/share/keyrings/debian-unofficial-archive-keyring.gpg --list-sigs
/usr/share/keyrings/debian-unofficial-archive-keyring.gpg
---------------------------------------------------------
pub 1024D/24C52AC3 2007-01-24 [expires: 2008-02-01]
uid Debian Unofficial Archive Automatic Signing Key (2007)
<ftpmaster@debian-unofficial.org>
sig 3 24C52AC3 2007-01-24 Debian Unofficial Archive Automatic Signing
Key (2007) <ftpmaster@debian-unofficial.org>
sig 4B2B2B9E 2007-01-24 [User ID not found]
There is no such sig as 4B2B2B9E on the debian-keyring
$ gpg --no-default-keyring --keyring /usr/share/keyrings/debian-keyring.gpg
--check-sig 4B2B2B9E
gpg: error reading key: public key not found
or on a public keyserver
$ gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --list-key 4B2B2B9E
gpg: error reading key: public key not found
I think that the best one can do in this case is to take Daniel Baumann's name
from the debian-unofficial website[1] and check that he has an entry in the
Debian developer database[2].

Subject: Keyboard sluggish in Etch, not Sid

I have both Etch and Sid installed on my Thinkpad R40. I installed Etch
because the wireless connection ceased to work in Sid - the card was no
longer connecting although it was recognized.
However, in Etch there is a problem with the keyboard in X. Fast typing
causes letters to be missed out. I thought it might be a difference in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf but I copied the version from Sid without altering
things. I also tried substituting the "kbd" driver with "keyboard",
again without success.
Typing in a console seems to be unaffected.
Any ideas where to look for the problem?
