I thought the tetex packages were in the process of becoming
transitional packages that would handle the switch from tetex to
texlive for users, much like firefox automagickly replaced itself with
iceweasel. Not that that convinced me not to do the switch manually,
but for the patient why won't this 'settle on it's own'?

In /etc/init.d there is a file called 'ssh'. It starts/stops/restarts
the ssh system. Do this as root:
/etc/init.d/ssh stop
/etc/init.d/ssh start
or just:
/etc/init.d/ssh restart
may work.

I know nothing about 'Fugu', you may want to use ssh/sftp on the server
to connect back to the server, as suggested by another poster, to check
that the service is running correctly and is accessible.
You may also want to install 'Putty' on your client as an alternate test
tool. I've used both the Linux and Windows builds to successfully
connect with my home server.

Hi,
I've installed a Debian unstable on a Intel ICH8 RAID 1. It's a little
bit different but I think you may find this helpful:

What you consider obvious may be quite vague to others, like me. :-)
Interpretation depends on the receiver's experiences and
assumptions. Here is how I read it (paraphrased with emphasis
added):
*If* you file a bug in Debian, do not *also* file it with the
upstream project, because the package maintainer will do so
if necessary.
Do you see how that interpretation does not answer my question?
Thanks again for your response.

Restarted the hard way (rebooted the whole system) and attempted to
connect from the server, this is the result;
/etc/ssh/ssh_config: line 47: Bad configuration option: Subsystem
/etc/ssh/ssh_config: terminating, 1 bad configuration options

Also, the client system is MacOS X, Fugu is a sftp client for that

RAD/rapid-application-development tool sought... (web page forms
interface to a database we define)
i've got a friend who's trying to get a license-free solution that'll
provide an html/web front-end to a database... similar to ms access,
but we're seeking 1) no licensing fees 2) an html interface, not a
proprietary interface. we're NOT looking for a cms like joomla, but
rather an engine for presenting forms to interact with a back-end
database.
we've tried to get Maypole installed, but run into cpan
dependency/'make test' snags; same for Jifty.
on debian 3.1, we're using postgres (not mysql) backend, and
phppgadmin for setting up the tables... any ideas?

hmmm the subsystem... command must be placed in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config, not
in the /etc/ssh/ssh_config.
Check both files and log messages when you start your ssh server.

Ok, the line is in sshd_config. I removed the extra line from the other
file and restarted the ssh server. Attempting to connect results in the
same error I listed before (Request for subsystem failed...) I don't
see a log file for ssh or sftp in the usual places and a search through
gnome didn't turn anything up either, though that usually doesn't work
anyway.

Today I installed some 30 packages, but got an error message from two of
them: samba and swat. They could not be authenticated. I tried to look
around for a problem, but I could only find that if I downloaded the
files manually, the md5sum was as detailed in /var/lib/apt/lists/
security.debian.org_dists_etch_updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages.
Then I tried to install gui-apt-key, but I got the same message.
Downloading the deb manually and checking the md5sum against the
Packages file, the match was perfect.
Any ideas?

Using synaptic, I click the "Install" checkbox to mark gui-apt-key
(which I have not yet installed) for installation. A dialog shows=20
saying
Warning
You are about to install software that *can't be authenticated!*
Doing this could allow a malicious individual to damage or take=20
control of your system
NOT AUTHENTICATED
+ gui-apt-key
The eligible buttons are Cancel and Mark
I noticed only now that in the case of this package, the warning comes
even before downloading the package. Earlier today, when I installed=20
some 30+ packages, the download ran, but then there was a dialog saying
it had not been able to download two packages. Unfortunately I don't
remember the precise details any more. I think I just let it configure
the downloaded packages, and then clicket "apply" again. At this point
just these two packages were marked for installation (samba and swat)
and probably the behavior from this point on was as now.

Try running this at the command line (as root):
apt-get install gui-apt-key
Please report the error message that you see in that case.

Andrew,
You may have forgotten this thread. Thanks for your previous
suggestions.=20
(BTW, your domain made me curious. Spokane, eh? I spent a very hot 4
days up there a few years ago attending a BMW motorcycle rally. From
what I see on the weather map, you're steamin' again!)
I'm currently running 'sarge' & am trying to upgrade to the latest in
sarge before upgrading to 'etch'. The problems I'm having doing this
make me reluctant to try & jump straight to etch before I get this
install worked out.
One thing that may have gotten my dependencies in a twist is that some
months ago I updated only libc6 in order to get the timezone updates for
the new DST settings. I've since read things saying that it's not a good
idea to upgrade the 'libs' pkgs separately. Who knew?
My most recent attempts are documented below. However, I really don't
get the convoluted dependencies. For instance, the line:
"libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (=3D 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6) but =
2.3.2.ds1-22sarge5
is installed"
This means the pkg libc6-dev needs the "-sarge6" version of libc6, but
the "-sarge5" version is installed, right? But installing the newer
version of libc6 is what I'm trying to do. Is it only the conflict with
timezone folders? I'm wondering whether deleting (or temporarily moving)
the 'zoneinfo' directory would relieve the error when it tries to unpack
libc6_2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6_i386.deb.
Do I need to remove a package - libc6 or tzdata - to get past this? I
don't get what's hanging it up. I may have hosed things But... I don't
get how, why, or what to do about it :-(
Thanks for any help...
Ron
I've tried 'apt-get -u dist-upgrade' & get:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (=3D 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge6) but =

Then tried 'apt-get -f install libc6' as well as 'aptitude install
