Yes, I know what you mean. I was using yaird to make my initrd, but it=20
gave some errors on the latest upgrade (and Steve Langasek, Debian=20
kernel maintainer suggested it is no longer maintained). So now I'm=20
exploring the initramfs-tools package. The first initrd was about *5=20
(five)* times bigger! I changed the config for including modules from=20
'most' to 'dep' and I got a much smaller (but still a bit bigger then=20
yaird) initrd. Haven't tried to boot with it yet, though ;)

what are the permissions of the mount point *before* mounting the nfs
share and what is the contents of /etc/exports on the server?

I found this a day or two ago, and found update-menus didn't help,
but I was a bit short of time. Seeing your post, I idly opened up
System, Preferences, and thought 'I haven't seen that Main Menu

Guess what: Main Menu has a list of submenus, including an unticked
'Debian'. I ticked it, Debian was back.

I'm considering creating some kind of user interface to pick URLs to put
into a system queue and have a queue runner start on ppp/ip_up.d and end
on ip_down.d. To do properly, its a big project. Similar to writing a
new print spooler.

With NFS, UIDs must match. So, your UID, not your username need to be the
same on both the debian box and your ubuntu box. You can find this info
out through the id command.

You might want to have a look at dcop, too. In its man page you will
find exactly the example you need:
$ dcop kwin KWinInterface nextDesktop
Another possibility:
$ dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface switchDesktops <n>
where <n> is an integer that tells how many desktops to skip (can be
negative).
Cheers,

I think this is by design; the GNOME folks seem to think that
the Debian menu is bloated, confusing, and duplicates the neat ,
functional, ergonomic Gnome menu, so the default is to hide the ugly
duckling.

Do you mean this problem?
yaird error: unrecognised line in /proc/bus/input/devices: U: Uniq= (fatal)
That can be fixed relatively easily, see bug #431534, followup 1.
(/usr/lib/yaird/perl/InputTab.pm is patched to simply ignore these new
lines in /proc/bus/input/devices.)

wow! I never noticed that. And in fact I probably wouldn't have as
this system doesn't have any initrd's left from yaird. My server
which was an etch/testing box for a while has a couple older initrd's
that are 1.4 megs or so versus the newer ones at 5-6megs. yikes.=20

same here. interesting. I'll have to play with that. You could
probably tighten it up even more by using the 'list' option and
putting a minimum-necessary list in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules. At
least that's how I read it.=20
So what is the significance of initrd size? (other than the obvious
filling up /boot issue). Is it really a problem to have "most" modules
in there? I can think of some situations where it might be nice to
have most of them -- mobo fails catastrophically and you want to be
able to just boot, for example.=20
Finally, I have on this (sid) system both initrd-tools and
initramfs-tools installed. The latter is brought in by the kernel
dependencies, and the former is manually installed. Who knows why or
when I did that, but is one preferred over the other?=20

This is where things do wrong: Instead of directly reloading the sound
modules (as it did in earlier versions) the script now calls
/etc/init.d/alsa with an undefined action specification. It seems that
alsaconf is more or less depreciated, see for example the reactions to
bugs #430624 and #432678.

This is a consequence of the missing modules.

Try to run:
udevtrigger -v --subsystem-match=sound
or modprobe the sound modules manually.
