Do you need help?X

the control panel doesn't override the modelines. It presents a list of all available modes as determined by xorg. This includes probed modes that may not be specified in the xorg.conf.=20

yes. don't bother with xvidtune.

using xrandr you can list and change to whatever available modes you like. If you find the right mode in that list, then use that modes information instead of the custom modes I'm about to talk about.

heh. heh. well...

okay, her's what I did and it finally works beautifully on my wife's machien with 1440x900. The problem I had is that xorg was always choosing a mode at 59.9 hz which the monitor couldn't display properly and it would also cause the monitor blankout sometimes. I used the online modeline generator to get a modeline that fit the specs of the monitor.=20

This custom modeline I entered into xrg.conf with a names like 1440x900_75. I think the _ was critical as it put that modeline at the top of the list which makes it the one xorg chooses. Other attempts by me used a more normal mode name and that put the mode further down the list causing xorg to not choose it by default (the list I'm referring to is the one produced by xrandr which is what xorg uses now, I believe).

pertinent parts of xorg.conf

Do you need more help?X

Section "Device"

        Identifier "Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
        Chipset Integrated Graphics Device"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
# Option "UseFBDev" "true"
        Option "ModeDebug" "YES"
Can we help you?X
Option "Monitor-VGA" "19MVWK"
EndSection

note the "Monitor-VGA" option which specifies whichmonitor to use. Though we only have one, I believe this is important.

Section "Monitor"

        Identifier "19MVWk"
        Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 31-81
        VertRefresh 56-76
        Modeline "1440x900_75" 136.49 1440 1536 1688 1936 900 901
        904 940 -HSync +Vsync

EndSection

That monitor-vga option *makes* xorg look to this section for the modes. note that the modeline should be all on one line. Also, I speced the vert refresh just slightly over the max because its possible for a modeline to calculate out to something other than the exact hz setting and if that's the case, then xorg will reject it even though its perfectly fine. for example, the 59.9 hz I mentioned above. xorg calls it a 60hz setting, but its not, and if the probed vertrefresh rate was 60hz then it would be rejected because the calculated rate wouldn't fit.=20

I hope this ramble helps a bit.

Greetings:

This has to be in a FAQ somewhere but I just can't find it. When I try to play a dvd with xine, it says it cannot play encrypted disks. I have installed libdvdcss2 and it works fine for playing dvds with mplayer, but xine still refuses.

I am using mplayer and xine from stable, and libdvdcss2 from debian-multimedia.

Can someone please fill in the missing link?

Thanks,

Confused? Frustrated?X

I have a PDF with a whole bunch of internal links. Many of them are simple page links, and work just fine in xpdf. Some did not work in xpdf, however, and upon investigation with Adobe Acrobat Professional I determined that they are JavaScript links that run this.pageNum=N where N is the page number to go to. Since xpdf does not seem to support JavaScript, I'd like some automated way to convert those links to be the simple kind that it does support. I looked into using Acrobat Professional, but there does not seem to be any way to accomplish what I want without doing it manually for each link.

Does anyone know of a way to script modification of a PDF document, particularly its links? I'd even be happy with a dependable C library to do the manipulation.

Thanks for all replies. On reviewing them and the faq, I think my wish still holds.

Call Pantek today for Open Source Technical Support at 1-877-546-8934 - 24/7/365X

Just like John Hasler has pointed out, the -X disables termcap initialization and deinitialization. The effect is that, when I browse say a big file, paging up and down several times, and then exit, my xterm will be left with all contents that I've browsed, with " ...skipping... " in between them.

So having a keyboard command 'x' or something can allows me,

  • have the freedom to decide whether I want to leave the content or not
  • invoke less the same way, no matter whether I want to leave the content or not
  • leave my xterm with the only pageful of info that I deliberately chosen, instead of cluttering it with all the contents that I've viewed.

I don't know if this is possible. But it's a nice feature. It comes especially handy when you want to preserve your xterm scroll-back history as much as possible, but still able to copy the content out of the man page, which might be lengthy and might took a while for your to locate where you want to copy from.

Thanks

The PC will be used to access perhaps 10 web sites (plus or minus) over a DSL connection and to run a few utilities to show GMT and a calculator and maybe a few additional applications. The box will also serve as a real-time data collection platform and web server for a local weather observing system, so I want to prevent it from being re-booted. I hope to make the PC reasonably idiot proof (the box will be kept separate from the users) - the keyboard and display will be accessible. The goal is to keep users from inadvertently trashing the machine, but to provide usability. Should I run a GUI (currently Gnome is installed)? How do I restrict access to functions that users shouldn't access? Is there a way to run a menu system, without using a Gnome...perhaps another window manager? Thanks, all Dave W.

Sabayon provides the ability to lock down GNOME and any GNOME app, in addition to Firefox, and Openoffice.org. Also, you can restrict access to certain features by setting some GConf keys. I believe GNOME has a system administrator's guide which details exactly what is possible and what their recommendations are. -- Andrew Barr We matter more than pounds and pence, your economic theory makes no sense...

Hi, y'all! Same freeze here with ASUS P5PE and 2.6.21-2-686 I thought at first that KDE 3.5.7 was the culprit. But the system freezes even with kdm just sittingin on the logon screen, the machine doing nothing. Last message I got was "disabling IRQ #16" when I happenend to be on the logon prompt of tty2. Nobody logged in, the computer being idle. Yes, it seems to be a kernel problem. lxcl01:~# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev c2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 01:0b.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AHA-2940U/UW/D / AIC-7881U 01:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13) part of lxcl01:~# hwinfo |grep -i irq 0: uart:16550A port:000003F8 irq:4 tx:135 rx:7 brk:7 RTS|CTS|DTR 1: uart:unknown port:000002F8 irq:3 2: uart:unknown port:000003E8 irq:4 3: uart:unknown port:000002E8 irq:3 uart 16550A, line 0, port 0x3f8, irq 4, baud 0 irq:1 0 ( 85) "timer" irq:0 1 ( 848) "i8042" irq:1 4 ( 46) "serial" irq:1 6 ( 5) "floppy" irq:1 8 ( 1) "rtc" irq:0 9 ( 1) "acpi" irq:0 12 ( 3899) "i8042" irq:0 16 ( 26755) "ehci_hcd:usb1" "eth0" irq:0 17 ( 29) "uhci_hcd:usb2" "uhci_hcd:usb5" irq:0 18 ( 0) "uhci_hcd:usb3" irq:2 19 ( 2404840) "uhci_hcd:usb4" "ide0" "ide1" irq:0 20 ( 184) "aic7xxx" irq:0 21 ( 6304) "Intel ICH5" used irqs: 0,1,4,6,8,9,10,12,16,17,18,19,20,21 IRQ: 0 (85 events) IRQ: 8 (1 event) IRQ: 6 (5 events) IRQ: 10 (no events) IRQ: 17 (29 events) IRQ: 18 (no events) IRQ: 19 (2404840 events) IRQ: 17 (29 events) IRQ: 16 (26755 events) IRQ: 19 (2404840 events) IRQ: 21 (6304 events) IRQ: 20 (184 events) IRQ: 16 (26755 events) IRQ: 4 (46 events) Cheers (or not so cheery), Eike -- Eike Lantzsch ZP6CGE Casilla de Correo 1519 1209 Asuncion / Paraguay

By the magic of aptitude, I installed a package that wanted udev, and as a result got rid of hotplug by accident. So I removed this package (can't remember what it was, nothing terribly important), reinstalled hotplug and thought nothing of it. A bit later, however, I noticed that my USB modem wasn't firmware-ing properly when I plugged it in. So I assumed (rather uninformedly) that after reinstalling hotplug, the eagle-usb thing hadn't registered with it properly. Ha ha ha thinks I, I'll just reinstall the modem driver. Bad move: I'd forgotten the hell it took to make it work in the first place. Unfortunately I only remembered this *after* 'make uninstall'. Next, various gcc version conflicts got in my way; managed to sort them out reasonably OK-ly. Now I have 3.3.5 symlinked to /usr/bin/gcc, same as the kernel. All fine. Eagle-usb now ./configures correctly. But I get some weird stuff while makeing. FIrst few things (DSP codes) compile fine, but it gets stuck on compiling eaglectrl. Error I get is (not exactly since for obvious reasons I'm on windows now and can't copy & paste between) syntax error in /usr/include/asm-i486/bitops.h:244. Any reason for this? I guess (again uninformedly...) some kind of libc6 versioin problem? Or something? :S Thanks. :-) A -- Adam Gray "Life + self-doubt = peace" -- Jan Buttinger

Python breaks too often (at least on Debian). The problem is that in case of such error, the error (though detectable) is ignored and the packages are installed without any user confirmation. Displaying the contents of new information of the NEWS file before the installation of packages is very important, as there may be critical changes (there have been such changes in exim4, but also in X11-related packages, where old[*] drivers may have been removed). Now, it seems that modifying /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20listchanges should be a workaround (but I'm not very confident in such user-side changes, as sooner or later they often lead to problems). [*] but still necessary under some conditions. --=20 Vincent Lef=C3=A8vre <vincent(at)vinc17.org> - Web: <http://www.vinc17.org/> 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: <http://www.vinc17.org/blog/> Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / Arenaire project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) End of debian-user-digest Digest V2007 Issue #2102 ************************************************** Received on Sun Aug 5 18:09:26 2007
