rEFIt was able to get me the Grub on the USB disk and I got the normal list of kernels to boot into. The root= option comes into the picture when you ask Grub to boot a particular kernel. So I had to correct that before I could boot into Debian.

Grub version..... I haven't checked but I have a strong feeling that it wasn't the Grub2 version. I will check it and reply back in a little while.

Do you need more help?X

Oh, and the problem with root= might be solved using the UUID stuff Ubuntu uses. How does go using UUID with Grub? Don't know yet :)

Can't find what you're looking for?X

It's definitely a start!

Remember, though, that every computer is a server and every computer is a client. It all depends on what service(s) you run on each box.

And, of course, some OSs are not so good at multi-tasking. They are (obviously) not good at being servers.

Excellent practical point.

Having a home network will reinforce what you've learned in those classes, though.

Would you not also need to set "umask 0000" to preserve existing file permissions? Adrian -- 24x7x365 != 24x7x52 Stupid or bad maths?

Maybe, not definately. Money still runs the world, and can often get more done. We still have copyrights and patents, so what value is it ever going to be to a company to give away their trade secrets that they are making millions on? Ideas and processes can still be patented and no open source products can duplicate them. Just imagine if Microsoft had been able to patent a "windowing system".

In an odd paradox, we can never get rid of copyrights or licenses because then we could not require those companies or persons who sell open source software to make the source code available.

Even though I'm fairly Deb-Linux savvy, I'm lost in this area. I did, however do some looking and ran the nm and ldd. nm came up with same undefined. ldd came up with following (much edited out): kali:~# ldd -v /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 libglib-2.0.so.0 => /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0xb7e7c000) kali:~# ldd -v /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0 libglib-2.0.so.0 => /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0xb7da4000) Hmmm ... the "/usr/local" looks strange to me compared to what you found and where you said it should be. Not knowing any better, I used "updatedb" and then "locate libglib" and got the following (edited): /opt/gtk/lib/libglib-2.0.la /opt/gtk/lib/libglib-2.0.so /opt/gtk/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 /opt/gtk/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1200.2 /usr/lib/libglib-1.2.so.0 /usr/lib/libglib-1.2.so.0.0.10 /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.a /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.la /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1400.0 /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.la /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 /usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1200.2 I see (I think) that it is apparently pointing to the /usr/local/lib copy which is version 1200.2 instead of the /usr/lib copy which has version 1400.0 Am I correct in this thinking? If this is the problem, how do I fix it? (I know I could copy the later version from /usr/lib into /usr/local/lib but that seems a very klugey and unwise fix.) Anyone else feel free to jump in here - I miss my computer and hate the one I'm using, forgive me if this message did not thread properly. And if anyone wants to try educating me on why the "local" is needed, I'm listening. Thanks, Don

After you reset your time, you will have to restart any app that is logging to syslog, you should probably also restart /etc/init.d/klogd and /etc/init.d/sysklogd. After that all of you logs should have the right time. -+- 8 out of 10 Owners who Expressed a Preference said Their Cats Preferred Techno.

While I am a long time bc user and won't knock it I might still suggest alternatives just because... If we stick to integers then the shell does this quite well. echo $(( 24 * 365 )) 8760 Bob --pWyiEgJYm5f9v55/ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: Digital signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFG3jbj0pRcO8E2ULYRArbJAJsHrKnig7Y/f+bhe+NbudMEWKiu6gCeNY0n 6NMO7TSQrOh+RJrXjN+0qPM= =waY6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --pWyiEgJYm5f9v55/--

That would be my biggest concern for problems too.

Sure. It has been done many times before. Should work fine. Along with the kernel and the initrd make note of the kernel command line options used to boot the previous kernel.
