i restored one package *** gnome-desktop-environment ***, and now it backs fine.

Do you need help?X

I meant to remove unnecessary packages to make my system clean, keeping only what I want.
I'm still wondering if there is a way to uncheck this package and also to get the problem resolved?

anyway, it could be a work around now having this package restored.

thanks to you guys.
Appreciated for your helps

It would help to know which packages you (un)installed right before the
problem started. Check out the /var/log/dpkg.log* files.

To rule out hardware problems, test your system with Knoppix or another
suitable live CD.

My guess is that you accidentally uninstalled one of the packages that
handles the keyboard setup. What output do you get for:

dpkg -l \*console\* \*kbd\* | awk '/^[^D|+]/{print $1,$2,$3}'

You can install Win again, but you have to find for a Live CD an then restore grub follow the next steps:

1) mount the Windows partition
2) with the command grub-install, you can reinstall the grub on the MBR
3) and the last, reboot an try

hello,

i would like to give xen a try, but i didn't manage to compile a dom0 host kernel yet.

that's because i would like to use a recent linux kernel (2.6.20 at least), build it the debian way (with make-kpkg), and as well build some external modules (nvidia-legacy-96xx, ivtv) with module-assistent for it.

in irc (#xen or ##xen) i was told to use the ubuntu linux-source-2.6.22 2.6.22-10.30 package, and according to the changelog it should contain xen patches, but unfortunately a 'make menuconfig' in the sources didn't give any xen options in 'processor-type and features'.

so how do you compile a xen dom0 host-kernel? is it possible with recent=20 kernel sources, and where do i find the corresponding xen patches?

Call Pantek today for Open Source Technical Support at 1-877-546-8934 - 24/7/365X

thanks in advance,
 jonas

Subject: Unblocking sound card, or adding stream (newbie)

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

I have a laptop with a sound card that only supports a single stream. (People on #debian helped me figure this out.) This is annoying not because i want to play twelve different sypmhonies at once through high-def systems, but just so i can listen to music while getting beeps from Gaim, or whatever.

If theres no way to do this, bummer i guess. But my problem is that sometimes i seem to have something blocking the sound card and i cant figure out what it is. I dont THINK im running any sound thing ,but then if i try to run xmms i get a "something's blocking your sound card" message, or if i play a YouTube video i just get no sound at all.

Do you need help?X

When this happens, how do i find out what's blocking hte sound card, and how do i kill this so i can play what i want?

Thanks.

Jen

No need to mount the Windows partition. And it can be the Debian=20 installer or rescue CD rather than a LiveCD (although I typically use a=20 LiveCD, as Alfredo suggests, 'cause I usually have one handy).

Could be anything. There's a dozen processes runing on that machine at any =
given time, and any of them may access some files anytime. smbd for instanc=
e checks its configuration file every minute or so, and there may be other =
services that do likewise.
BTW, if this machine is a server, wouldn't you expect it to do some work ev=
ery now and then? Or if you didn't, why do you keep it on all the time? I c=
an't get my head around people who insist on leaving unused machines powere=

IMHO We need a better question before we can help you.

One a bit 'noisy' one is updatedb, which updates the locate database. Other candidates might include logrotate and other stuff in /etc/cron.* Then there's swap possibly and a ton of other stuff. My very low end PC makes noise each time I log in with ssh.
With 'sudo lsof' you'll get a list of open files. Maybe someone else is able to give you more detailed information.
