I'm not running SA, but my ISP does. Look what I get for two of those: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.1 (2006-03-10) on relay1 = =20 X-Spam-Level: ** = =20 X-Spam-Status: No, score=3D2.2 required=3D5.0 tests=3DINVALID_TZ_GMT,RCVD_B= Y_IP =20 autolearn=3Ddisabled version=3D3.1.1 and the second X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.1 (2006-03-10) on relay2 = =20 X-Spam-Level: = =20 X-Spam-Status: No, score=3D0.0 required=3D5.0 tests=3DHTML_MESSAGE = =20 autolearn=3Ddisabled version=3D3.1.1 My ISPs SA (and not only) is really terrible. For a while I was missing=20 a lot of posts from the list so I checked the Spam folder via the=20 webmail (which does not work with anything except Internet Explorer,=20 though it seems to be Squirrel webmail) and found the missing d-u mail. =20 I had to disable their filtering, which was also tricky to achieve as I=20 couldn't delete the default spam filter, so I just made another filter=20 which was moving all the "spam" to the inbox before the spam filter rule=20 could see them. I thought of readjusting my maildrop rules to try to use the SA headers,=20 but seeing the high false positives and false negatives count I think=20 it's not worth it. I took the above as an invitation to start yet another long thread about how much better postgresql was. As I did not want to get you started on that, again, I just ignored it. :-)

Checking my reference (you know who), I do not find the caution about mysqldump in his books on MySQL 5.0. I have never stopped anyone from using the server when I used mysqldump and never had a problem anyway. Thanks for you interest though. :-) Wayne -- Air conditioned environment - Do NOT open Windows! _______________________________________________________

Bashing MySQL is a pleasure all it's own. >>> Yes, I think it is, but the OP said he was using 4.1 and thats what my >>> DuBois Mysql 4.1 book and Articfox said. It might corrupt files 'if' >>> there were read/writes while running mysqldump. >> Hmmm. I mentioned v5 because you said that you use it.

Good to know.

You haven't mentioned it, but are you using phpmyadmin? If so, exports and imports are fairly painless. I find it easier than the command line, but I'm using apache and php anyway. It's also handy for hacking back the mistakes that your access software has added... From version 4 (sarge) /etc/mysql/my.cnf: bind-address = <IP address of relevant NIC> and a restart will get it listening. Apart from the debian-sys-maint user, there doesn't seem to be much localisation of mysql. The standard docs should be OK. There really isn't a whole lot to it, apart from the privilege system. phpmyadmin really helps there. The worst danger is of permanently locking yourself out before you've got the hang of it, at which point you reinstall. Don't commit priceless data to it until you understand the privileges.
