I just recent got an old T20 and I am attempting to use Debian on it. I am using a PCMCIA orinoco wireless card. Here is the crazy part. The card is recognized by the installer. The installer asks me for my essid and my WEP key. After I input the information, the wireless card get its ip address over dhcp and then works flawlessly. The trouble comes when I finish the install and boot the machine. Once the machine comes up, I cannot get the wireless card to work. iwconfig shows that it has all of the correct information, but it cannot get an ip address. I have tried both 4.0r1 and a testing snapshot. Both have the exact same problem.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Chris

Back months ago when I was still using my tsoft DSL +SA and email on my own box, SA would trap quite a bit of spam - hundreds, usually, gotten through the course of an average week, would be trapped by the SA filters I was using. But much of that spam was attacks on my old address dfox@tsoft.com, which no longer exists, and
was little, if ever, used. Still, I would get a large amount of spam simply because I maintained the same email address for nearly seven years.

I switched to gmail because of a move, and an ISP change in May of this year. At first I figured "oh no, the spammers have found my gmail account!". Not to worry, since looking at the headers show them coming from d-u. And much of the spam that used to be sent through d-u didn't get filtered by SA on my local machine.

I tagged a few messages in gmail and reported them as spam (via the "report spam" button), but all that seems to do is to move the message into a spam folder that I have to go clean out. Anyone know different - does gmail even use that input to train filters?

The worst spam surge I remember, though, was sometime last year when there was a flood of spam with "XXX wrote" in the subject line, where every conceivable first name in the what you would name your baby book was sent out as a separate message.

Can we help you?X

I've seen some like that - ones that I take one look at, and say "This has to be a virus" without
needing to investigate further.

Neither pump nor dhcpd is installed. When the machine boots, all of the wireless settings (essid, wep key, etc) are set correctly. The dhcp client times out. It doesn't get an ip address and doesn't set any routes. Thanks, Chris.

By default, MySQL on Debian is listening only on localhost and remote access is disabled. in /etc/mysql/my.cnf Comment out the following lines : bind-address = 127.0.0.1 skip-networking and restart MySQL. See if you can change these settings to these: io 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 Try to enable it too. Also, try adding this on the kernel command line: isapnp=off I noticed the following for Sarge: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 2005-02-26 01:39 /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 65 2007-09-09 16:09 /dev/ttyS1 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 66 2005-02-26 01:39 /dev/ttyS2 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 67 2005-02-26 01:39 /dev/ttyS3 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 68 2005-02-26 01:39 /dev/ttyS4 Do you know why the device node for ttyS1 is so recent? In order for COM2 (/dev/ttyS1) to work properly, IRQ 3 and IO-PORTS 0x2f8-0x2ff need to be free. Look into the /proc filesystem and find out what is hogging the needed resources and move whatever it is somewhere else if possible; I don't mean to remove it from the machine :-) Just change the resources it uses. Mind you, I have no idea how to do this. You might need to recompile your kernel with support for exotic serial boards. Go here: "make menuconfig-> Device Drivers-> Character Devices-> Non standard serial port support. I noticed that Sarge recognizes the modem's serial interface right away--before any on-disk modules are loaded. Probably the module that makes the modem available is compiled directly into the kernel. I couldn't help but notice that COMX is missing from the 2.6 kernel. It's missing from both the dmesg output and from the kernel source. Right under the line in Sarge showing the settings for ttyS02 is this line: COMX: driver version 0.85 (C) 1995-1999 ITConsult-Pro Co. <info@itc.hu> That comes from <kernel-2.4-source>/drivers/net/wan/comx.c which does not exist in kernel 2.6. It sort of sounds like they changed the way serial ports are done for 2.6, and the old code was removed, but the new code knows nothing about your modem. However, this may be a red herring because comx.c is part of the 'wan' directory which seems to relate to special Wide Area Network interfaces.

I think your suspicion that this is a kernel bug/removed-feature is correct. Try the other things I discussed first. If none of them work, perhaps file a request-for-enhancement with the kernel developers. The enhancement would be to add support for your modem.

Although I procured the "official" Etch DVD set from a supplier listed by Debian, there were numerous notifications during the "dist-upgrade" that I was installing "untrusted packages". And, due to my slow internet connection, I refraine= d from running the recommended "aptitude update" at the end of the successful "dist-upgrade". Is there an alternative to "aptitude update" or do I have to live with th= e missing md5sums and "untrusted packages"? Felix Karpfen --=20 Felix Karpfen Public Key 72FDF9DF (DH/DSA)

I find directions on how to prepare a USB-key to do one or the other, but not how to do both with the same USB-key. Is it possible to boot to grub and in its menu choose between either doing maintenance on the current hard disk or running the installer to install a basic debian system on a new hard disk? -- Haines Brown, KB1GRM

Message-ID: <1189486707.23803.66.camel@panoramix.askesis.nl> Content-Class: urn:content-classes:message Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi, Does anyone know if it is possible to import iCal files in Evolution 2.10.3 on Lenny? If so, are there any special consideration, except using the File->Import etc. procedure? I have an iCal file but when I use File->Import->Single file etc., I can select the file but the "File type" drop down box is never enabled (which is the case for e.g. mbox files). -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V.
