Do you need help?X

You could also run 'sync;umount /dev/sda1' before unplugging, just to be=20 sure.

Do you need more help?X

I went ahead and did that, fixed another problem (dynamic mmap running out of room), and
installed (but haven't yet enabled) the new kernel 2.6.22-k7 from sid.

But when I try to install nvidia-kernel-common and nvidia-kernel-source from sid, using aptitude -t unstable, I get a forest of installation problems which to me don't seem like I really want to do this yet.

The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Remove the following packages:

Keep the following packages at their current version: nvidia-glx [Not Installed]

Upgrade the following packages:
xserver-xorg [1:7.2-5 (testing, now) -> 1:7.3+2 (unstable)] xserver-xorg-input-evdev [1:1.1.5-3 (testing, now) -> 1:1.2.0~git20070819-3 (unstable)]

xserver-xorg-input-kbd [1:1.2.0-1+1.2.1 (testing, now) -> 1:1.2.2-3 (unstable)]
xserver-xorg-input-mouse [1:1.2.2-1 (testing, now) -> 1:1.2.2-6 (unstable)]
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics [0.14.7~git20070517-2 (testing, now) ->
0.14.7~git20070706-1 (unstable)]

xserver-xorg-video-intel [2:2.1.0-2 (testing, now) -> 2:2.1.1-4 (unstable)] xserver-xorg-video-via [1:0.2.2-2+b1 (testing, now) -> 1:0.2.2-5 (unstable)]

Leave the following dependencies unresolved: nvidia-kernel-source recommends nvidia-glx (>= 100.14.19) Score is -362

Don't know where to look next?X

Needless to say, I think I will say 'q' at this point.

I do my housekeeping in aptitude interactive mode, with a flat package=20 list (this is my default, but you can get one from the menu) where I=20 mark everything as auto-installed (press M) that I don't specifically=20 want. It might take a while, but aptitude will then remove all=20 unnecessary stuff.

Sorry my friend, I honestly think that you shouldn't run a mixed system=20 if you can't sort this out on your own (not claiming that I could=20 though).

Hi,

I have a portable Iomega 120 GB HD. I am running etch. When I connect the HD to the USB port, etch doesn't show any device attached to the port... I wonder why? the portable hd doesn't acts like another usb device?

Thanks in advance for the help

I agree, let's ignore the presence of the Ensoniq card for now. [ snip: list of loaded snd-modules looks OK to me ]

You probably already tried to reduce the Playback level for the mic (to make sure it is not some weird feedback effect).

Check the full output of amixer for the Mic Boost settings. I would put it at 1.00 dB or even 0.00 dB for a start.

If you cannot improve the recording quality by reducing the Mic Boost then you could try to successively turn all capture controls to zero until you find the one that causes the distorting amplification. I recommend using "alsamixer" for this; it has a curses-based interface which gives you a good overview of the playback and capture controls. You can switch between the two groups of controls by pressing the TAB key; use CURSOR LEFT/RIGHT to select a control, CURSOR UP/DOWN to change volume/amplification, and SPACE to toggle capture. The names and the interaction of the capture channels are not the same for all cards, unfortunately. Therefore you are left with trial and error, but I am pretty sure that one of them will allow you reduce the amplification to a reasonable value. The names of the controls are sometimes confusing or at least not really helpful; for example, my Intel ICH8 card has a control called "Digital" which determines the amplification of the recordings. If I set it to its maximum value of 30 dB then I get the same kind of problems that you described in your earlier mail. -- Regards, | http://users.icfo.es/Florian.Kulzer Florian |

Are you using an initrd? (Using an initrd is the default for the stock Debian kernels.) Maybe the modules are included in your initrd and loaded so early in the boot process that the modprobe.d settings are bypassed. You can check your initrd like this: zcat /boot/initrd.img-$(uname -r) | cpio --list | egrep 'fan|thermal|processor' (I know that this works for yaird-generated initrds, and I think it should also work with the ones from mkinitrd.) -- Regards, | http://users.icfo.es/Florian.Kulzer Florian |

Well, I do not really use aptitude, but I really don't think this is the best approach for you to install the nvidia drivers. I have an FX 5200 here, too, and what I did was install module-assistant and then run m-a a-i nvidia. Worked like a charm. It should be noted, though, that if you're running a kernel version greater than 2.21, I think, you may run into problems with paravirtualization, since the precompiled kernels from 2.21 on come with that option turned on by default, which disallows non-GPL kernel modules. If you wanna keep a new kernel you will have to recompile it without that option. Hope this helps. -- []'s, Francisco M Neto End of debian-user-digest Digest V2007 Issue #2505 ************************************************** Received on Sat Sep 29 19:02:15 2007
