Hello,..
frequently i need to do backup so i choose cron to do so (just a tar
command).
but most of the time it is the file wasn't changed so i search for a way
that a backup will be insiated by a change to file (touch).
at first i thought about a program that will cheack the status of the file
(stat()) and if the info had been changed then it till backup it .
then i realized that i can't work like that (since you never now when
excatly it has been done) and more to be effective you need to do lots of
read calls.
i googled and found inotify (not sure that is the right solution).
will it be called on a change or it will be just as any other deamon that
runs in the memory .
anyway if it is working only when data is changed then is there a program
that will be called (like im asking in this mail).
thnx in advance

I'm running Lenny.
I've inserted the lines to .bashrc as you sad
but it only worked to the terminal
it had no effect in gnome (eg: using Alt+F2)
I inserted 'source /etc/profile' directly into
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc
and it's working now!
I still want to know the correct way to do this.
if you someone knows, please send.
Thanks,

Don't set the PATH this way. Specify the path list fully:
JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk1.5.0_12
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH JAVA_HOME
Find out your current PATH before and add :$JAVA_HOME/bin to the end of it.

Both my Sarge and Etch installations have /etc/environment. You might
not be running Debian at all.
If it's obvious that /etc/environment is being ignored, you can place
this line in ~/.bashrc
. /etc/environment
Or you can just place the PATH and JAVA_HOME adjustments directly into
~/.bashrc.

wrong. The notify is usually sent to all servers which have NS record,
except the one in SOA. So, put the name of real master into SOA (even if
it's not accessible from the net). don't put name of any slave to SOA.
You can of course override these settings with "notify (yes|no|explicit)"
and also-notify settings in BIND config.

if you enter the "set" command in bash you get a list of bash
variables that are accessible to all programms that you execute. This
is called "the bash environment" (see [1] for more info). A lot of
programms really need to check the values of some of these variables
to execute. Cron has only a small portion of them set so a lot of
programms fail when run from cron (can't tell if this is your specific
case though)

I think you are looking for rsync which "synchronizes" the files between the
source and the destination. The transfer is done only if there is a change
across those files. It is a great tool and I use it for performing my
backups.

Where do I find the perl modules, Net-Telnet,TimeDate and a few others.
Are they on a debian repository, or do I have to download from cpan ?
apt-get doesn't find anything

I would guess that a lot depends on the xorg video driver and the video
card in that box. If it will do any hardware mpeg
conversion/scaling/whatever then it should be fast enough but if it
doesn't then you're relying on the CPU to do all the work and it may not
be up to it. I've never run an apple so I don't know about the drivers.
What does top show? If any of the resources are heavily used it could
induce latency that shows up as video artifact.

What if you have cron run su - [user]? That should set up a login
environment.

Since upgrading my print server to etch I can no longer access the cups=20
web interface from a non-local browser.
Accessing it from localhost works fine but from any other machine I get
"426 Upgrade Required" followed by fatal error 40 when it tries to reconnect
using https.
This is despite having the following in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:
<Location />
Encryption Never
Order Deny,Allow
Deny From All
Allow From 127.0.0.1
Allow From 192.168.1.*
</Location>
Why is it ignoring "Encryption Never" for machines on the local
network but honouring it for localhost?
