Though one needs to save and restore one's sources.lst if it's not the
system default in order to reinstall all the packages. And if the distro
version has moved on since the original install some more jumping
through hoops will be required.

Thanks for the input - I asked because I thought I'd seen warnings about
using aptitude after using dselect since installation. I am using
aptitude now without apparent issue, although my system isn't a very
complex setup and I'm on stable.

Hi all,
I have some basic knowledge of linux kernel programming
and going further i have some questions on the file system device
drivers. I am not getting information on the internet on this topic.
Can someone suggest me a good mailing list where i can ask questions
I may be asking some basic questions on this topic and so the mailing
list must not kick me off ...
thanks

Try 'man eboard', look in /usr/share/doc/eboard or try 'dpkg -L eboard'.

I have posted this to the Postgres list also.
Cannot get Postgres 8.2 working on Debian sid using the Debian package.
At the config stage I get a message telling me to run:-
pg_createcluster 8.2 main --start
Doing this (as root) produces the following output:-
Creating new cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.2/main, \
data: /var/lib/postgresql/8.2/main)...
sh: /dev/null: Permission denied
fgets failure: Success
The program "postgres" is needed by initdb but was not found in the
same directory as "/usr/lib/postgresql/8.2/bin/initdb".
Check your installation.
Error: initdb failed
But the program postgres IS in the same directory as initdb
8.1 installed OK on my Etch server so I tried that on sid
Same result
Anyone any ideas?
Any pointers would be very welcome

I started seeing that fail2ban is not working properly on my debian
server, while working in other places where I'm using other distros.
I started searching and found this in the logs after putting in
debugging and restarting fail2ban:
2007-10-07 10:03:12,744 fail2ban.actions.action: DEBUG iptables -N
fail2ban-ssh
iptables -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN

iptables -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh,sftp -j fail2ban-ssh returned 200
What does the error mean? The fail2ban-ssh chain exists in iptables:
Chain fail2ban-ssh (0 references)
target prot opt source destination
RETURN all -- anywhere anywhere
But fail2ban doesn't block when I get up to 7 fails from the same IP,
while I have it configured to ban at 3.
Any ideas?

Most of the time spent on my laptop is reading. Often the laptop is not
powered, so that i can hear the inner disk spinning down and restarting
every dozen seconds, because many processes are running, while i am
reading.
My question is: is there a way to force processes not to read and write so
often?
Alternatively, is it safe disabling the disk spin down?
My understanding is that time to spin down is set
in /etc/default/acpi-support, where SPINDOWN_TIME=12
and controlled by the kde-guidance-powermanager package. Is that correct?
Why so a short time (12s) is set as the default?
Thank you

Hi
When playing CDs on my Lenny system, I get great stereo. However,
whenever playing mp3s - even those that I have ripped myself in stereo,
I don't get stereo at all: music only comes out of the right speaker, no
matter which application I am using for playback. I am using ALSA and as
far as I can tell have the basic arrangement set up properly. I ran
alsaconf and selected the correct card, and then alsamixer and adjusted
the settings: the CD still plays in stereo, but the mp3 players not.
Can anyone give me a steer in the right direction please?
Thanks

I would start with the first problem that is reported: "sh: /dev/null:
Permission denied". What are the permissions of the /dev/null node on
your system? It should be writable by anyone:
$ ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 2007-10-07 14:28 /dev/null

Hi all,
I use acpi_cpufreq (cpufreq_conservative)
When I bootup the system the cpu frequency is set to the low
and whenever there is a need the cpu frequency automatically shoots up
and caters the need.
But the problem arises when i recover from a suspend-to-disk. The cpu
frequency is stuck to the highest and doesnot come down at all !
Is this a bug or am i doing any mistake here ?

The fact that direct CD playback is in stereo does not necessarily mean
that ALSA is correctly configured for stereo playback of sound files.
A better test is:
speaker-test -t sine -c2
This command should produce a (rather boring) sine wave output which
switches between left and right channel every few seconds. Does that
work?

You don't give it a device, you give it a vg and lv name, so:
$ lvreduce -v -r -L -50g debian/home
But you'd better be sure you've already shrunk the *filesystem* itself, or=
=20
you're going to lose all of your data.
