Hi again,
I finally fixed this issue by recompiling the kernel with HPET_EMULATE_RTC=3Dy.=20

Subject: RTC problems in Debian on PowerEdge 1950

Hi guys,
I'm trying to get a vmware server up and running in a Debian 4.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 1950 rack server, but I have some problems with RTC.

Symptoms:=20
- When running "hwclock", Debian says "select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out".=20
- When starting a guest host on vmware-server in Debian, I get about 3500/sec log messages about "rtc: lost some interrupts at 2048Hz". Some times it changes to 1024 or 4096.

Attempted solutions:
- Changed HWCLOCKPARS in /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh to "--directisa", didn't solve.
- Rebuilt kernel with Hz set to 100 and 1000, both didn't solve. - Tried the 2.6.23 kernel, didn't solve.

One solution that I've found on google is to just switch to Ubuntu Server, but I don't want to do that, as Debian is the required spec for our vmware servers here.

Please help, I'm desperate!

Can't find what you're looking for?X

PS. Please CC all mails to me, as I'm not a member of the list.=20

Kind regards,
Dak.

I do this all the time; in fact, it's the reason I use OfflineIMAP. My backup machine, desktop, and laptop all sync with several mailservers.

FWIW, udev has started renaming eth0 to eth3 on my home box (there is no eth1 or eth2). I haven=B4t had time to fix it yet, but will take a look at it tonight. The message, IIRC, is udev: renaming eth0 to eth3, so you might want to repeat your dmesg | cat ... without the ^ and see if something similar is going on.

This is false.

As any other programming language COBOL is as portable as the programmer make it (same thing apply for Java/C/Python/OCaml/Perl...)

FYI, there is a big difference between GCOS 8/GCOS 7/IBM MVS cobol compiler (and you will find another set of differences with Micro Focus, Fujitsu...)

If this argument is the main to choose COBOL rather than C, i really think you should reconsider your position.

Regards,
Sylvain Le Gall

ps: i am working for a company that converts program sources between different dialects of COBOL (and especially from MVS/GCOS to UNIX). My work is to deal with the non-portability of COBOL...

Are you seriously telling people that you can't add a NIC to Debian without re-installing? Get a life.

Now, if you're using some pointy-clicky lindows thingy, perhaps. Get rid of it.

udev should find all your hardware. If you find it doesn't, do the old-fashioned method. Find the right module (read the kernel-docs, read the chips on your NIC, match them up), and insmod it. If you need parameters its easier (if you want a bit of a GUI) to install modconf which will ask for the parameters and put them in the right place.

Your module name would go under /etc/modules and be loaded at each boot.

Once you have an eth* you can then go ahead and put it in /etc/network/interfaces.

Can we help you?X

Done.

The Debian way isn't a mistery. Read the debian-manual, man pages, and if necessary, ask here.

Doug.

I think you could use something like

export TEXMFDBS="$(kpsewhich --show-path=ls-R):~/.etc/texmf"

Can't find what you're looking for?X

but that is probably not much better than running

mktexlsr ~/.etc/texmf

directly when needed.

I simply deleted my ~/texmf/ls-R when the system was changed, as suggested in /usr/share/doc/tex-common/NEWS.Debian.gz. This works fine for me, but it might become annoying if you have too many files in the texmf directories in $HOME. I have about 800 files in there and I don't notice any delay when latex has to search for one of them while it processes a source file.

I recommend ... Emacs! More seriously: why? Stefan PS: An alternative to Emacs might be ... CVS (yup: it's usually pretty easy to convert from RCS to CVS), or just any other revision control, tho the conversion might be trickier.

that soudns like a very badly behaving driver/program/something-or-other. Do you know what the file is that keeps overwriting? might be a clue. Maybe its not a problem with fsck.vfat but with somethign else that is overwriting the FAT and then fsck.vfat gets all confused trying to recover a borked FAT. just a thought. > >

>=20 with ctrl and alt not working, it'll be tough, but can you switch to a vt? chvt <a vt number, usually 1-6> as root should switch you to that virtual terminal.=20 Then try out your keyboard in the vt. This eliminate (or not) the X issue.=20 also, you could boot a live cd and see if the problem persists, pointing then to a hardware problem.
