I found a few problems on my system (Lenny/testing) after I replaced fam with gamin:

  1. Menus in OO.org took many seconds to open -- at least 15, perhaps 20. This was extremely irritating and made OO.org a pain to use.
  2. The GNOME trash applet no longer updated to show when there were items in the trash. I could no longer empty the trash from the panel. Not such a big deal, but I typically have most windows on most desktops maximized so I don't usually make use of any icons on the desktop. So I found it convenient to empty the trash from the panel.
  3. Nautilus was considerably slower to respond to any attempts to open a new window. The problem wasn't as severe as the problem with OO.org

Restoring fam and removing gamin put things back to normal. But the reason I installed gamin in the first place is that exaile requires it, so in the end I decided to remove a lot of GNOME and am using Openbox instead. OO.org works fine with gamin, as long as you aren't using it under GNOME. If you use it under GNOME, it appears you need fam, or will face some major irritation. I still use the GNOME panel, mainly because I love Tomboy and find a few other features of that panel appealing, but I no longer use the Trash applet nor the trash bin at all. I'm no longer using Nautilus, though it is still installed. I can get by pretty well with mc and the command line.

Do you need help?X

So much for Linux "just working." When they tell you Linux is "about choice," they often forget to mention that you'll find your choices restricted by packages and apps that do not play as well together as they are supposed to. GNOME is a really nice DE, but I am sick and tired of my choices being restricted by using it.

Hi Jeff, sorry for the delay in responding.... >Are the errors with the server reported through synaptic or when you >try to start the server? Both. It began with me firing up mysql-navigator... it started OK and showed the option to connect to the localhost - but when I tried to connect to the db it reported: Cannot connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'[2] So I, somewhat simplistically, presumed that one of the many dozens of updates that ran after my period away from my desk had screwed-up MySQL. Because this is a relatively new machine with only small volumes of data in the databases (which I could reconstruct if 'push came to shove') I decided to simply reinstall MySQL. The client seems to install OK using Synaptic but when it gets to the server Synaptic baulks and reports :- E:mysql-server-5.0: sub-process post-installation script returned error exit status 1 E: mysql server: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured My biggest problem is that I am still unfamiliar with where all the logs and programmes are maintained/held in Linux, so my investigations tend to consist of repeatedly lurching from one wild idea to the next in the forlorn hope of gathering a clue as to the root of the problem (rather than having the detail knowledge necessary for any systematic probing and fault identification). Therefore any help/advice is gratefully received. Ian

Not a waste, but an accurate question is always useful. But then, who hasn't been in a position where they don't even know what to ask? In those cases, it's *always* best to describe symptoms instead of jumping to a conclusion. http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html BTW, top-posting is considered rude.

Not all directories in TEXMF use the ls-R files. Look for TEXMFDBS in the (debian generated) texmf.cnf file. By default, only the entries in TEXMF that have the "!!" (use only ls-R) prefix are used for TEXMFDBS.

You can add TEXMFHOME to the TEXMFDBS list in the source configuration file and regenerate texmf.cnf. Are you sure you need this? Unless your $HOMETEXMF is on a network server or you have lots of files there, the overhead of ls-R searches probably exceeds the cost of direct filesystem searches. -- George N.
