I like to use wajig as a frontend to apt but it has been removed from
Sid because it depends on python-apt, which is also missing, apparently
because of a binNMU connected with apt. I have no idea what a binNMU is.
Googling produces a lot of uses of the term but no explanation. I have
used Debian for a number of years but this is the first time I've heard
of it.
There was an upgrade of apt yesterday but this did not solve the
problem. Can someone kindly enlighten me about binNMU or point me to
some documentation about it?

Some background:
when a Debian developer (DD) chooses to be the lead maintainer for a package,
he/she makes 'maintainer' uploads of software. These are normal. When
some other DD changes something to his/her package and uploads those
changes, he/she is making a non-maintiner upload (NMU). Now, sometimes
that upload is only the 'binary' package, not a 'source' package. So this
is a binNMU: a binary package upload by a non-lead debian developer. I
hope this is correct and somewhat helpful or if not, some kind person
will correct what I've missed. It is something that is not very common.
and is noted normally by a 'b' in the version numbers.

All it needs is one page to jam and you end up with another print job
headache. I remember trying that sort of thing. Usually ended up doing
one sheet at a time ... a right royal pain ... especially on a network
where there are possibly other users submitting print jobs.

There is an article in Linux Gazette #141, "GRUB, PATA and SATA,"

afaapps_2.6-3_i386.deb from http://www.brandl.net/pe2550/ works for me
on the etch kernel. Also, the kernel logs any problems that appear, so
logcheck will do for healh monitoring.

Hey !
You can just change all the occurances of the word
"etch" for "sid" in your /etc/apt/sources.list .
Then run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade".
There must be another - more proper way - to do this
with "apt-get dist-upgrade" but I've never used it.
See man 8 apt-get for details.

yes, that's the solution... I had realized it some time after posting
the question :-)
it wasn't a problem with mount it was a problem related to the
permissions in the partition itself.

I reverted to port 25. In my firewall, I set up a custom service in it
for ssmtp to use port 587. This may solve my problem.

Tell exim4 the port to use? Where would that be?

Add deb ftp://ftp.sara.nl/pub/sara-omsa dell sara to /etc/apt/
sources.list and apt-get install dellomsa. This will get you the Dell
monitoringtools; the omreport-tool will get you all sorts of info on
the raidcontroller:
----
/opt/dell/srvadmin/oma/bin/omreport storage -?
omreport Reports component properties.
The available command(s) are:
Command Description
adisk Display array disk(s) properties. DEPRECATED: please
use pdisk
pdisk Display physical disk(s) properties.
vdisk Display virtual disk(s) properties.
controller Display controller(s) properties.
enclosure Display enclosure properties.
channel Display channel properties. DEPRECATED: please use
connector
battery Display battery properties.
globalinfo Display global storage properties.
connector Display connector properties.
----
Apart from that omreport will also give you information on fan
speeds, temperature, installed hardware, etc. It also installs an
SNMP agent that allows you to monitor RAID status, fan speeds,
temperature, etc via SNMP. The SNMP agent is disabled by default, but
is easy to setup. We use this both for monitoring and to graph fan
speeds and temperature with cacit.
For more useful info on using Debian on Dell hardware see http://

These seem to be pretty serious problems, worthy of being reported as
bugs. I cannot comment any further on these issues since I don't use
Gnome.

I think it is unlikely that such obvious problems would go unnoticed by
the (Debian-)Gnome community. Could you be missing some recommended
packages? You could run
aptitude search '!~i(~dgnome|~dgtk|~dopenoffice)~RBrecommends:~i'
and check if anything suspicious turns up, for example something related
to gnome-vfs. (This search command should find all not installed
packages which have "gnome", "gtk" or "openoffice" in their description
and which would satisfy a currently unfulfilled recommendation of some
installed package.)

Ah yes - that was it. I installed xscreensaver, which then comes
available in gnome, and had to change the xvnc startup in inetd.conf to
use -depth 24 from the default 16 (didn't set the depth previously).
Thanks - I was actually after the 'poltyopes' screensaver I've seen on
other machines - it was in xscreensaver.

Ok - I actually used '/ screeensaver' in aptitude and installed
xscreensaver which has the particular one I'm after in. After some

all is sorted.

What do you mean by "right" font dimensions? If the size of a font is
given in "points" then this is an absolute measure. In computer
typography a point corresponds to 1/72 of an inch (about 0.35 mm) [1].
If you system is set up correctly then a "12pt" font should be displayed
with a size of about 4.2 mm. (As far as I know, this is measured for the
full height, from ascent to descent; see [2] for a drawing.)
You should get the right font size if all the resolutions are specified
correctly. You might have adapted your font size preferences to an
incorrectly configured system earlier. The only way to know if the sizes
are correct is to put a ruler to the screen and measure (at least
approximately).
> But, i don't understand: if i have a bigger resolution, i should have
> smaller fonts, or not???
If you specify a larger resolution then the typesetting engine will
think that your dots on the screen are smaller than they actually are.
It will therefore use too many of the screen dots to make one "point"
(which should be 1/72 of an inch) and your fonts will become too large.

When you upgraded to Etch you made the transition from XFree86 to Xorg.
The relevant configuration file is now /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you are

Driver "kbd"
and
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
now; check your xorg.conf file for this.
