I don't see anything obvious, but the names and the functions of the ALSA controls are always a bit counterintuitive to me. (Also, for added fun, they are different for every card.)

You could keep speaker-test running in one terminal while using "alsamixer" in another terminal to play with the controls until you hear sound. (Alsamixer is curses-based; the CURSOR keys move around and change volume, M toggles muting, SPACE switches values, and TAB changes between playback and capture channels.) Then it is trial-and-error time: I would start with looking at "IEC958" and switching the "Input Source" ones. Sometimes weird interactions exist, for example it is possible that one channel has to be muted for another channel to have output. This might take a while; alsamixer at least gives you direct access to all ALSA channels. (It may well be that alsamixergui also does this; I simply have never used it.)

In this case there are not too many of them, only 'PCM', 'Front', 'Line', 'Mic', 'IEC958', 'Capture', 'Capture', 'Input So', 'Input So.'
> You could keep speaker-test running in one terminal while using
> "alsamixer" in another terminal to play with the controls until you hear

That was fun. I think I tried every permutation. PCM has only volume; Front, Line, and Mic have volume and mute; IEC958 has only mute; the two Captures have volume and <space> toggles a display of L R CAPTUR beneath, whatever that may mean (stereo on and off?); the two Input So. have only the option to be Line or Mic. Anyway, it remains steadfastly silent in every conceivable state while speaker-test continues to say Time per period = 2,986811 0 - Front Left and so on. It is not hardware, I have booted Doze a couple of times, and that gives nasty little jingles. Never mind -- I'll buy a phonograph, a soft cloth and scour the second-hand markets for vinyl... Thanks anyway. -- richard

Yeah, same here I now noticed. Just running tzconfig without making any changes seems to have done it. --D.

That was a while ago. Last night I decided I wanted gnomad2 from unstable so amended my /etc/apt/sources.list and installed it (along with other dependencies, particularly I remember OO being removed/(re)installed). Now I seem to be having problems with gdm/X (non-responding). I think I'd prefer the stable Etch without gnomad2, but how do I easily "unroll" what I did last night? I'm happy to re-install Etch from the CD but is there a quicker way and anyway not to lose the data on the HD? Pointers to FAQs (surely I'm not the first!) are most welcome! T.I.A. Michael

Then how does my USB light get power; surely it doesn't "request" enough power to run an LED? I can also charge my Palm with the computer off; there's nothing running to receive any "request". Doug.

I am experiencing random lockups of the display since a few hours. Opening a window seems to trigger this. So far it has happened when launching gvim, iceweasel and gnome-terminal (not everytime). What happens in such cases is that the newly opened window is left without the window-manger's borders. Keyboard locks up. Mouse responds to motion, but mouse-clicks do not work. I am able to ssh from a remote machine and kill metacity which seems to bring everything back to normal. There does not seem to be any bug filed against metacity at bugs.debian.org, so I am not sure if it related to metacity. The only change I have made to the system today is to upgrade icedove to the testing release and install qemu. Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Is there something I might have done that is causing this?
