I have had good results by installing the tftpd-hpa package. You can run it from either inetd or standalone. For running the standalone version you need to disable it in /etc/inetd.conf and set the relevant flag to "yes" in /etc/default/tftpd-hpa

Do you need help?X

Install some tftp client (say tftp-hpa), then try getting a file from the machine:
==
$ tftp localhost
tftp> get somefile
==

If you get an error almost immediately saying the file could not be found, that means the server is running :)

You can go to http://localhost:631 (after installing cupsys) From there follow the steps to install a printer. On one of the pages you will be given the choice of selecting a driver or uploading your ppd file. I don't know whether you can use the ppd file from the Mac driver in linux. Theoretically, I think it should work, but I never manager to get one of our network printers to work in linux using the windows ppd file. Anyway, the procedure is simple enough, so is worth a shot. -- Raj Kiran Grandhi

No need for a system-rescue CD since the machine boots. Just boot with init=/bin/sh and you're in without a password as root. Of course, / is mounted ro so you'll have to remount it. Use passwd next time. Doug.

You mean that the busybox doesn't have any editor at all? The busybox package (not necessarily the same as the initrd version) has vi and ed. No ed in the initrd? Doug.

If you mean that the mail content is in html, if you hit 'v' you get the list of attachments. Arrow down to the html version and hit enter. Mutt should start up lynx for you (if you're in a VT) or whatever browser if you're in X (never tried that). If you mean that plain-text emails include http://... type references, just open up another VT and fire up lynx. Doug.

Also, how is an ordinary user supposed to click on anything and change the system time. Root shouldn't be running X to be able to change the system time. Unless the thing the user clicks on links to some su system. Doug.

I didn't look real hard, but I did look. I thought of ed, but maybe I just didn't see it. I can induce a "waiting for root" situation easily on my laptop... I'll confirm it. Yes, you do. You have three networks: 192.168.1.0, 192.168.2.0, and 10.91.0.0. The cable modem will route from the 10.91.0.0 but won't route from other networks.

What you have appears to be one of those U3 drives. Visit http://www.u3.com/uninstall and you will find an uninstall utility using which you can disable the cdrom 'feature'. Unfortunately, the uninstaller runs only on windows, so you will need access to some windows box to run it from. Apart from using the uninstaller, I do not think there is any way to disable the annoying cdrom completely. -- Raj Kiran Grandhi

Does /var/log/syslog give you one device or two? Are they two partitions on one drive or what? If so, can you just repartition the USB stick so that there is only one and put a new filesystem on the new partition? Doug.
