I think you should investigate what alsaconf is doing... If you want to=20

But the file /etc/init.d/sshd does not exist.
The only such file in /etc/init.d is ssh.
How do I check the logs?

yes. sorry for the confusion there. `/etc/init.d/ssh start` will start
the ssh server, which happens to be called sshd.=20

Your sshd is not running; it should be listed at least once in the ps
output.

Do you get any error message when you try to start /etc/init.d/ssh? Is
there anything in /var/log/daemon.log? Does the sshd-blocking file
/etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run exist on your system?

I think this is one of the purposes of apt-pinning. BTW, IIRC you must=20
set a negative priority (I guess -1 will do) to prevent the package from=20
being installed.
You could also investigate what is pulling the "offending" packages. I=20
think they are recommended by a lot of other packages so I guess you=20
could turn recommends off for upgrades, though, AFAIK recommends are=20
only pulled on the first install of a package.

Hi All,
I'm unsure if "blacklist" is even the correct terminology for what I
want to do, but at least it's a starting point.
I administer servers for a small company. If it was up to me I wouldn't
even have a gui on them, but the boss and developers come from the
Windows world and require a gui. So, I'm stuck with it.
What I would like to permanently get rid of are network-manager and
avahi-daemon. Is there a way of marking these packages with either apt
or dpkg so that they will not be reinstalled, ever? I've had problems
with these two packages being auto-reinstalled when doing apt-get
upgrades, and I just don't want to have mess with it anymore. I know
it is at least theoretically possible with apt-pinning by setting the
priority very low, but I've been looking at the man pages for apt-get
and dpkg and can see no way there of doing this without apt-pinning. Is
there another way and I've just missed it?
I would just as soon not use apt-pinning if I don't have to, but if
that's what I must do, I'll use it.

Do this: dpkg --get-selections | grep ssh and send the results. I am
wondering if you have the openssh-server installed. You can get everything
by just doing aptitude install ssh.
