You want your cake and eat it too. Either compile your sources into a deb and install it with apt, or install a dummy package that "supplies" e.g apache or whatever.

Hello;
I just downloaded the file
debian-reference-en_1.11_all.deb
from the Debian site. What is this;
a zipped archive file? It is supposed
to be english html version of Debian reference. If it is a tarball, should I rename it so tar can extract it?
Thanks in advance;

no, its a .deb, or debian package file. I think it is a kind of zip  archive, though I've never bothered to check.=20

don't rename it, just=20

dpkg -i debian-reference-en_1.11_all.deb

or do=20

apt-get install debian-reference-en to have apt install it for you (you can rm the .deb).

Do you need help?X

sorry for not being clear. the problem was that dpkg thinks you've removed the package as evidenced by the dpkg -L failure and the status of tftpd shown in dpkg -l (rc for removed but still configured (i think)) while apt-cache thinks the package is installed as shown by the previous apt-cache policy output.

By --reinstalling it, the files should be there now.=20

you can verify with=20

dpkg -l tftpd

which should now show=20

=2E..
ii tftpd blah blah blah

and=20

dpkg -L tftpd

Do you need more help?X

which should show a handful of files (its a pretty small package).=20

and now you can try restarting inet.d and see what happens.

Can we help you?X

I'm sure I am overlooking something, but after scouring the dpkg documentation, I cannot find the options that tell me a list of all packages that are installed on my system and the time/date on which they were installed and/or updated.

What I am looking for is something similar to rpm -qa, but for Debianbased  Ubuntu systems, and also with some date information for each package (such as an installation log).

Thanks in advance!

Sir / Madame

I have searched google but I am finding very little info about this bug that is reported by apt-get when I try to install this package. I have several packages behind libdb4.6.19-2 that I hesitate to upgrade because of this bug.

I am running Debian Lenny on amd64x2 and I am up-to-date except for those packages behind libdb4.6. For example there are several kde apps like kmail.

Can't find what you're looking for?X

I am wondering how safe it is to install it? What side effects will it have on my system? Is it likely to crash my system? This is a production system and I have to much time invested to do a reinstall. I would like to install the updated version of kmail because I am unable to add or edit any identities for a new email account. I am hoping that updating kmail will correct that.

I have learned that this only affects some architectures from Don Armstrong. But he instructed me that I could get more and better information from you.

Any insight you could give me would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Randy

The questions are asked by debconf. Try: # dpkg-reconfigure debconf and set priority to high. Then only high priority questions will be asked. I don't know if the questions about restarting services are high priority or not. Your aptitude -q tells aptitude to supress progress indication but aptitude's job is only to fetch the correct packages (managing dependancies); it tells dpkg to actually install the package. Dpkg then calls debconf to configure them. According to the debconf man page, Joey Hess wrote it. If nobody here can solve the problem, ask him directly. OTOH, upgrades generally should be done with interaction unless you're using something like cron-apt that does updates automatically. I don't know how it handles debconf questions. Doug.

Its a debian package, a deb. If you're on debian you install it just like any other package. If you're not on debian and just want it so you can read it without installing debian, you may want to check on the debian website under docs. I think it is available as a plain tarball or something that you can read on non-debian systems easier than unpacking the deb. The website: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference in section 1.1. Says that there are several formats available for download at http://qref.sourceforge.net. I don't see an html tarball there; the html links to index.html. However, there are pdf, ps, and txt. Doug.

I assume you are running apt-listbugs and that is providing the bug notification to you. When you are running that, you can simply type in the bug number and it will display the bug report for you.=20 You can also go to the debian website and follow the links to bug reporting and find the bug there. I usually just type in bugs.debian.org/<bug-number> and it take sme right there. >=20

this is a FTBFS bug on s390 architecture. Are you running s390 architecture? this package is currently not building properly on the auto-builders for s390 architecture. If you don't fit that profile, then this bug shouldn't affect you.=20 >=20
