OK. I have a C program using opencv that opens a jpeg file , inverts it and displays it. I had tried to modify it to grab a frame from the camera, instead of a file, but it had not worked, hence, my last post. Today I tried again and now it seems to be working just fine. I didn't do anything different, but it is working now, so I am happy.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get the correct driver compiled and loaded.

A good deal of the strace scrolls off the screen (strace /usr/sbin/apache2 > strace.txt gives me a 0 length file), but, I found 2 files that aren't there: /var/run/nscd/socket /etc/ld.so.nohwcap I "touched" the second file and the error went away. However, I don't know anything about the socket. --=20 Raquel =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D As long as I have any choice in the matter, I will live only in a country where civil liberty, tolerance and equality of ALL citizens before the law are the rule. --Albert Einstein

OK, this is different from the bug I experience. Mine seems to have something to do with setting the time with ntpd (where old and new time vary a lot), hence the question about your connection. Here it's triggered as soon as an internet connection exists. Sorry that this doesn't help you! I found the culprit, but not the solution. There is the thinkfinger pam module that allows login in using a finger print. Everything works fine for other logins when trying to use the password, but ssh fails for some reason. the entry in /etc/pam.d/common-auth: auth sufficient pam_thinkfinger.so auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass nullok_secure Any ideas how to make both work? thanks

Are you able to run memtest86+ on the box, every time I have had weird problems with daemons dying it has been due to flaky ram. Might be worth ruling out. Adrian -- 24x7x365 != 24x7x52 Stupid or bad maths? <erno> hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

Message-ID: <4731A686.8000503@jaeger.mine.nu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello (I haven't found an answer to this in the FAQ and Debian documentation or elsewhere (I did only look for two hours, though; maybe I haven't found the right place for advanced Debian documentation yet?).) Is there a way for me to set up a script/hook locally for a particular package so that when that package is being upgraded (e.g. through security upgrades), that script/hook is being run automatically after the installation? The reason I'm asking is (this time) that the file /usr/lib/perl/5.8.8/Encode/Unicode/UTF7.pm (in package "perl") has a bug (a needless warning that hurts me). Since I needed a fix quickly and didn't assume that it would be fixed in Debian stable anyway I just fixed it locally. Of course after an upgrade the issue returns. Similar situations have occurred repeatedly, so I'm looking for a general solution. (I'm not [yet?] looking for a way to automatically refetch source packages and patch and rebuild them instead of installing the binary package for the case where the sources of a compiled program need to be patched, albeit that would be interesting as well.) Thanks, Christian.

Try putting the pam_thinkfinger.so in /etc/pam.d/login instead of in common-auth which many sections import. Doug.

If you are currently using "stable" entries and have already made upgrades or installed any package after etch has been released, you are most probably running a mix of etch and sarge already. On official mirrors, "stable" always refers to the current stable version which is etch now. By using "stable" in your sources.list, you automatically receive packages from a new stable version as soon as it is released. Running 'aptitude upgrade' in your situation should show a lot of packages being "kept back". If this is the case, you should try to do 'aptitude dist-upgrade' in order to bring your system to a consistent state. You may have to run this more than once to resolve all dependencies. Since you appear to have already read the release notes, I don't think there's anything else you need to do. J. --=20 I think the environment will be okay. Sometime in the last two days, the machine lost its network connection to the outside world. It seems to be a software problem. It had been fine since I built it in January. Here's what I know: 1. If I boot from the XP partition, I have full internet service anywhere I try. So the hardware seems OK. There is only one NIC. 2. Running Etch, I can ping the router (192.168.0.1) and check its software configuration in iceweasel. The router configuration is the same as it's always been. It shows that the router has received an IP address (10.something) from the ISP. 3. I cannot ping or otherwise reach any site past the router by name or by IP address. If I try, it times out. 4. Rebooting doesn't help. 5. The output of "ifconfig -a" looks normal. It shows eth0 on 192.168.0.4, UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST. I can post the whole output if necessary. 6. I haven't done any upgrades with apt since five days ago, which is clearly before the problem started. 7. Nothing jumps out at me from dmesg or /var/log/messages. 8. I found the iceweasel cache files from my last successful browsing. Then I used find to list every file on the system that had been modified since then. Again, I didn't recognize anything scary. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to continue chasing this down. It may go slowly, since the problem is at home but my only connection now is at work. Thanks.
