For two instances of the same kernel, why not just use a chroot with
users using schroot -pc ?

You could look at shorewall. It has a great set of docs in
shorewall-doc.
Your laptop has three potential interfaces: eth(cable), eth(wireless)
and ppp. Do the two eth end up with different unit numbers? (I've never
used wireless). From a firewall perspective, does it matter if at any
given time you're using a particular interface? Assuming that you're
not forwarding, although perhaps the Nat config will change.
You could create a set of config files for each setup and write a script
that copies the correct set to /etc/shorewall then restarts shorewall.
Have the script start when an interface goes up.

What ever driver I used gave me the same problem, and last night I

Thanks, Daniel, That helps.. I now have window's with borders on
current screen , after running: sudo metacity --replace. I get an
error though!!
[Window manager warning: Failed to load theme "Clearlooks": Failed to
find a valid file for theme Clearlooks]
and I am not sure this condition will be there at next login....
Re: Andrei's question..
" How did you try to install compiz? Please detail your steps, maybe we
can find a way to revert what has been done."
Since it's been a couple of day's, this is best that I can recall.
I run a NVIDIA Geforce 8600GT video card. So There were some howto's on
the (I think) Debian-Compiz wiki. calling for some changes to xorg.conf
under "etch". I run "lenny" but the same video driver as I did under
"etch", NVIDIA 100.14.19 so I added the suggested changes...via $ sudo
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I recall a addtion entry to the "device' section and a new "extensions"
entry...
then I used " # aptitude install compiz " to load Compiz. It installed
with out error... I then logged out and in. and that's where the problem
happened... I PANICed ! I was able to use a xterm OK so I replaced the
xorg.conf from xorg.conf.bak and # aptitude remove compiz....OK. That
didnt help.
Then I asked for help.... This is the best I can remember...Memory is
slipping as I get older...really old...8-(
Thanks, to both of you...
Jack

hello
i want to play around with ip-telephony and thus need a webcam, i have
an old thing that does 340x280 which is enough to see thatthere is
indeed somebody but the quality is simply awful, so what webcam are
there that are easy to get working under debian with more appropriate
resolution and framerate?
when i searched with google for something usable, i was drowned in a sea
of mostly negative responses....

My mod4/5 looks different:
mod4 Super_L (0x7f), Hyper_L (0x80)
mod5 Mode_switch (0x5d), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x71), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x7c)
For the rest I see the same, so I guess it is OK.

The switching will only work if you get something like this:
$ xmodmap -pk | grep '(F[0-9]\+)'
67 0xffbe (F1) 0x1008fe01 (XF86_Switch_VT_1)
68 0xffbf (F2) 0x1008fe02 (XF86_Switch_VT_2)
69 0xffc0 (F3) 0x1008fe03 (XF86_Switch_VT_3)
70 0xffc1 (F4) 0x1008fe04 (XF86_Switch_VT_4)
71 0xffc2 (F5) 0x1008fe05 (XF86_Switch_VT_5)
72 0xffc3 (F6) 0x1008fe06 (XF86_Switch_VT_6)
73 0xffc4 (F7) 0x1008fe07 (XF86_Switch_VT_7)
74 0xffc5 (F8) 0x1008fe08 (XF86_Switch_VT_8)
75 0xffc6 (F9) 0x1008fe09 (XF86_Switch_VT_9)
76 0xffc7 (F10) 0x1008fe0a (XF86_Switch_VT_10)
95 0xffc8 (F11) 0x1008fe0b (XF86_Switch_VT_11)
96 0xffc9 (F12) 0x1008fe0c (XF86_Switch_VT_12)
Try to change your xorg.conf to:
Option "XkbVariant" ""
and restart X. (You can also comment out that line completely.)
You can also try to run
xmodmap -e "keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1"
while X is running and check if this restores CTRL-ALT-F1 switching to
tty1.

thank you doug
for me the connection is not really an issue (i am on
a cable connection and was just wondering why and iso
didn't already exist, though i didn't consider the
versitility of the netinstall disk at the time,
however the fact that other companies do have terminal
only versions still makes me wonder why debian doesn't
[slax frodo, toms root boot, etc])
i already use nothing but aptitude for package
managment so that is not an issue, and i will try to
remember to install doc packages.
one other question (knowing that i can read about
packages at www.debian.org) which commandline/terminal
apps are the best in their various areas?=20
thanks again for the responce

Yes, it does. I use it at three systems on dedicated firewall boxes.
Hadn't thought about using it in a laptop environment.

They do.

That's a darned good idea. For hotels and such, I could start the
interface with some fairly stout (read paranoid) settings as well.
Any others out there?

Hi, Michael
Tried it, purge & reinstall, log out & in -- No Change... Only way to
get borders back is $ metacity --replace....that works...

I have it running, so can't use 443. But I already had this mind. I have
asked the related admin what other ports are open. I am not running any
other services, so hopefully I can make ssh listen on one of those ports.

Hi All,
I just recently installed Debian 4.0r1. It is my first experience with
Debian or GNU/Linux. I=92ve been building and running C programs just fin=
e
with gcc. However, I=92m unable to compile C++ programs. The command g++
returns =93program not found=94 and
gcc main.cpp
returns the error
gcc: error trying to exec =91cclplus=92: execvp: No such file or director=

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello,
I have a data file collection on three hard disks, each with just one partition. The 'primary' partition has the complete directory structure. The two 'secondary' partitions partially mirror that directory structure. There are some data files on the primary partition. For each data file on one of the secondary partitions, there is a soft link to it from the primary partition. Each partition has a couple of GB space left.
Is it possible to migrate these partitions into one logical volume without loosing or backing up the data? If I had a backup storage large enough to hold all the data ...
Thanks in advance,
Malte
