Correct. Whatever dependency errors arise (i.e. if aptitude uninstalls
GNOME or something, which it may very well do, I'm not sure) you'll need
to take note of (Perhaps copy/paste into a file?) and fix manually
afterwards.
Sometimes it takes some time to fully fix problems like this, so I'd
save aptitude purge for a last resort unless you're pretty comfortable
with what you're doing.

Dumb question: are you sure that g++ is installed?
(Debian is highly granular, so just installing gcc won't get you
everything you might want.)

The various gcc compilers are packaged separately. You probably want
to install the package "g++".

I'm using openldap2.3-2.3.30 with samba-3.0.24-6 and
phpldapadmin-0.9.8.3-8 on Debian Etch. Actually it's running on a
virtual machine using VMware. I had everything setup and running
smoothly. I was testing a script to create users home/data/profiles and
set ownership/permissions. Somehow the script changed the ownership of /
(and subdirs) to one of the users (but not perms as far as I could
tell). I set it back to owner root. I then set the ownership back on
everything I know of. Now slapd will not start unless I take out
shadowLastChange out of the following acl:
access to attrs=userPassword,shadowLastChange
by dn="cn=admin,dc=mecompany,dc=ie" write
by anonymous auth
by self write
by * none
In pdbedit all users come up with:
pdb_get_group_sid: Failed to find Unix account for admin
Primary Group SID: (NULL SID)
And when I try to access phpldapadmin:
Error
Fatal error: Cannot read your configuration file
"/usr/share/phpldapadmin/config/config.php", its permissions are too
strict.
Is there some ownership that's possibly still wrong or did it do
something to the database? Scratching my head for a few days now. TIA

Though a decent connection-tracking 'allow anything outbound, nothing
new inbound' policy without any interface or IP matching should be a
good starting point, unless you run services on your laptop.

I've replaced my old clunker P3 machine running Mandrake10 with a new
shiny box with AMD64 dualcore with Debian.
My mail records on the old machine run to almost half a gig and span
more than 40 local directories under the inbox and go back quite a few
years.
I presumed that the 'import' routine on Evolution would be able to
import the files for storage and use on the new box.... but it appears
that Evolution will only import from 'other' programmes and not from
it's own older versions.
I have read some similar responses which say that you need to manually
recreate every directory and hand copy the emails. Surely not?
Anyone know how to solve this problem?
Many thanks, Ian

What happens if you cp (or tar/detar) the whole mail tree directly
to the new location? (I'd then rm the co-located index files. Evo
should then recreate them.)
The geeky thing to do would be to turn your P3 into a satellite
relay mail server by converting the mbox files to Maildir, then
install/config courier-imap, postfix, fetchmail, spamassassin and
maildrop.

as a quick update i have just got a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks
working with ekiga and luvcview. the beta of Skype is giving me some
video errors, but the built in microphone is working great. i am hoping
to get it fully working with Skype as i have time this weekend.
i also have a Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision, but in quick tests it was
detected and only the microphone was usable. again that will be a
project for a different day as i really want this camera to work.
oh, am running Debian laptop with 2.6.22 kernel and V4L2 drivers thus far.

BINGO ! that did it!

that didn't work... but after changing that lin in xorg.conf CTRL-ALT-F1 wo=
rks=20
again, as does CTRL-ALT-F7/8..
so, even though I have a "us" keyboard, those keys don't work with it in th=
e=20
file..

Initially I did not think too much about xorg.conf since your problem
was caused by an upgrade without configuration change (if I understood
you correctly). I guess the new version of Xorg is somehow less tolerant
towards ill-defined configuration settings.
I meanwhile looked up the allowed XkbVariants for the "us" XkbLayout:
$ awk '/xkb_symbols/{print $2}' /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us
"basic"
"euro"
"intl"
"alt-intl"
"dvorak"
"dvorak-l"
"dvorak-r"
"dvorak-classic"
"rus"
"mac"
"colemak"
"altgr-intl"
"classmate"
"classmate-intl"
"classmate-alt-intl"
"classmate-altgr-intl"
Leaving it empty should be equivalent to choosing the "basic" variant.

well yes and no.. the upgrade caused me to redo xorg, because I have the
NVIDIA card.. and I DID have this problem once before, but it went away.
Obviously my fooling with the envy/nvidia settings changes xorg.conf but I
never manually changed the keyboard settings, so it is one of those
configuration applications that does it. The ONLY thing I change in xorg.conf
is that one line, from nvidia to nv, after a kernel update, until I can go
back in and redo the driver.

Really? I actually never thought of that. Because right now I am only using a wireless connection. Now that you have mentioned it, I have never ever used a wired connection with this laptop. I was unaware of this issue. I guess I will have to look at it in more detail.
Thanks for mentioning this.
