Read the installation manual.

Rescue mode is activated from the install CD boot prompt with the word 'rescue'.

Ensure that you installed grub in e.g. /dev/hda and not /dev/hda1

The Philips SPC900NC/27 has glass lenses (not plastic), works at low levels of illuminiation, and works with the popular PWC driver. About US $80.

Or just boot the install CD in rescue mode. It should mount the root drive so that he can run a shell chrooted to / so that he can edit /etc/fstab on the drive and not /etc/fstab in the ramfs of the installer environment.

Alternatively, he could boot his regular box with init=/bin/sh so that only the / filesystem is mounted ro and /etc/fstab doesn't get read and nothing gets mounted. He'll have to remount / rw so that he can then edit and save a corrected /etc/fstab.

No. plain standard readline. Could use ncurses. I don't do GUI. Note that the python part was just a front-end to the postgresql database. I didn't have to worry about storing and retreiving any data.

I just downloaded it last night. I logged in on a second X session as a second user and untarred it in that user's home directory and ran it directly from there. I only ran it 30 mins or so, and didn't "put it through it's paces". It didn't "feel" or look any different, really. (But I was running a dist-upgrade in the background part of that time, so that might have slowed things down.) Then when I closed it and went to log out of X/Icewm, the machine froze. I didn't have another machine with which to try to remote in, so I don't know how frozen the machine was, but as far as I could tell from the console, it was totally non-responsive. I have no idea what caused the freeze-up, but it seemed suspicious that it happened right when I was closing FF. Earlier I had closed FF, and when I restarted, was told an instance of FF was already running, so there may have been a dangling FF process still running from my earlier attempt. A second attempt at firing up FF started normally. All this to say that my first taste of FF3 has not impressed me yet with speed or function, and I have a suspicion (very likely unjustified) that it contributed to my lock-up. Of course, it is beta software .... (Oh, I also had Iceweasel-Sid running on the first X session under the first user, so that could have conceivably added to the problems.) -- Kent

The only caveat is that you have to write some sort of "script file" for it to be effective. You can use it in the interactive mode and do simple plots. But if you would like to add labels and such it would be easier to put in in a gnuplot script file. I actually think this is more powerful than a GUI application. Here is an example of a GNUPLOT script file.

Hey, If you like the sound of GNUPLOT but want a GUI for it then give Qgfe a try. From the package description: " QT based Gnuplot Front End Qgfe is a GUI for gnuplot so that there is no need to learn gnuplot language to start using it; qgfe allows to export gnuplot scripts for further manual costumization of the plots. " Here's a screenshot: http://www.xm1math.net/qgfe/qgfe.png cheers, Owen.

On my machine, when there is only one drive installed, it is seen by the bios, grub, *and the kernel* as /dev/sda no matter which SATA port/controller it is plugged into. So /dev/sda stays /dev/sda when the 2nd drive is removed, and /dev/sdb becomes /dev/sda when the first drive is removed. However, as noted previously, I have the array not starting problem regardless of which drive remains plugged in. -- Rich Carreiro

ftp is blocked. DNS could have been tried. But I was able to make it work on one of the SSL ports that they have open for outgoing. I have no service running on one of my SSL ports and make SSH listen on that. Seems to be working.

I tried with no-ip and another such service. It didn't work. Thanks.

You might be looking for the hibernate[1] package. Once installed just type hibernate-disk for it to work. [1]http://packages.debian.org/etch/hibernate -- Rage Callao

You're definitely looking for abook. If you plan on using abook alongside Mutt you may want to add this to your ~/.muttrc: # Use abook with Mutt set query_command="abook --mutt-query '%s'" macro pager A |'abook --add-email'\n That configures Mutt so that if you type Q at any time you can query your adress book for names (And Mutt will automatically begin composing an e-mail when you select the name you're looking for). It also lets you add e-mails to abook directly from Mutt using A. I personally use it, and I'd advise you should as well, it's very useful. - -- If programmers deserve to be rewarded for creating innovative programs, by the same token they deserve to be punished if they restrict the use of these programs. - Richard Stallman -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHRagwg6qL2BGnx4QRAjtYAKCuTR57k9WittggnqYArdYuTHD0/wCfTBQ4 vr5d3v/6r2ukr5BwCSjqI/c= =if+m -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

You might post exactly what is in your configuration files so we can see if you configured anything incorrectly. - --=20 If programmers deserve to be rewarded for creating innovative programs, by the same token they deserve to be punished if they restrict the use of these programs.=20 - Richard Stallman -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHRaipg6qL2BGnx4QRAiwiAKCp+uO4kwELpUV6V/A9RO1k+A91gACgh6h4 JIP6Do4dS39zgoxLWzXpt3o=3D =3DH/gR -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- End of debian-user-digest Digest V2007 Issue #2842 ************************************************** Received on Thu Nov 22 11:03:26 2007
