Try installing the package using apt-get or synaptic. This page[1] lists the dependencies of wvdial.

You should be able to boot by adding the boot parameter "init=/bin/sh". After you get a prompt with that run "mount -o remount,rw /" and then fix fstab. When you're done, run "mount -o remount,ro /" and exit the shell. The system should reboot. Daniel

Like almost all Free Software, wvdial is already in the Debian archive and can be installed with 'sudo aptitude install wvdial'. Before attempting to install a package that interests you from some Web site always check for it first in the Debian archive. If it is Free Software chances are that it is there. -- John Hasler

Do you know of a debian package for this? Looks like it will not work with my 'etch' due to the fact that I have QT4 tools loaded. I will give the tarball a try anyway. -- John W. Foster

In doing some research, I think it stems the fact that "Newer devices using the Microsoft MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) are NOT supported," (taken from the description for libnjb-cil package.) The newer gnomad2 package in lenny and/or sid, apparently has support for this (with the libmtp package). I tried installing the libmtp package on my Etch system, and then reconfiguring the gnomad2 package, but failed. I then considered installing the gnomad2 package from lenny repositories, but backed away when I saw the amount of changes which would be required (and, considering your experience, I feel I made the right decision). Instead, I just installed it from source, using instructions at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/creative-zen-touch-with-plays-for-sure-on-kubuntu-is...a-camera-518976/, which worked (however, there's an issue with permissions somewhere, because I can only connect to the usb device as root.) I found some instructions for changing permissions at http://newbiedoc.berlios.de/wiki/Managing_a_Creative_Zen_mp3_jukebox_with_Gnomad2; so, I'm going to mess around and see if I can make it work with a normal user. Normally I don't like installing source programs on my Etch system, but there is a great feeling of satisfaction that I feel when I get them working (kind of like cooking your own meal rather than ordering takeout). Hey, I can't see it from my etch box as a package, but from my Ubuntu desktop box (lenny/sid based) it comes up as a universe/math package. According to an article I found[1] referencing debian unstable package additions[2], qgfe was added to unstable around July '07. It's possible you may find it in backports, but it's still a fairly recent addition. cheers, Owen. P.S. http://debian-news.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2872 (dated July 3rd 2007) http://packages.debian.org/unstable/newpkg_main (lists packages added within the last 7 days)

Most DSL modems have what purport to be router/firewalls in them but they are crap. Best to put the modem in bridge mode and use a seperate router/firewall. I use an old Aptiva running Debian. -- John Hasler

Have a look at this page: http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/booterr-i.htm and follow the link that says =E2=80=98Primary master hard disk fail=E2=80= =99. Is it a BIOS message? If so, you could try opening up your case and tightening the cabling. I tried it on milestone 7 or 8 (beta 1 is milestone 9). I only used it for about one day, but I really liked it. The GUI for managing Places is very nice, although it didn't yet have support for things like mass tagging. The way Places works in the URL bar is just fantastic! I didn't get around to trying the advanced Places searching. It seemed very snappy, and the page zoom is nice. And I always get excited about better standards support. Anyway, I am really waiting for more of the features (especially Places) to make it into the Mozilla nightlies, which is what I have been using for a few months now. Cheers, Kelly Clowers

Thank you, that's simple and makes sense. -- Ken Irving, fnkci+debianuser@uaf.edu

A great value that I get from X is the capability to have several different xterms open, so X is not *just* for GUI applications. Yes, screen can also be used for this (I guess), but with X you can have one screen showing terminal sessions from one or different hosts, move them around, shrink, expand, hide, etc., etc. Ken -- Ken Irving, fnkci+debianuser@uaf.edu End of debian-user-digest Digest V2007 Issue #2843 ************************************************** Received on Thu Nov 22 14:55:14 2007
