I have a dell laptop on which I have just performed a basic install of etch using netinstall, on which I installed xfce. (I did have gnome, but I needed to repartition, so i decided to try xfce.)

The problem is now with my networking
At home, I use dhcp - no problem.
When I bring the laptop to work, I use fixed ip addressing.

I used to have a file which contained

Do you need help?X

ifconfig eth1 XXX.YYY.ZZZ.WWW netmask 255.255.255.0 route add default gw XXX.YYY.ZZZ.1
cat "seach <domain>" >> /etc/resolv.conf cat "nameserver AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD" >> resolv.conf

which I would simply sudo when I get to work and I got my static ip address networking to work.

This does not work now - I can't ping out. When I run ifconfig at the command line, it gives me the correct ip address, and tells me that it is up.

The /etc/network/interfaces file is

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
allow-hotplug eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

I did a very basic install =96 maybe something is missing. any ideas?

I don't know if this is the best, but I found the option -output-format=20 to latex. You can specify dvi (default) or pdf. There might be a config=20 file somewhere that makes pdf the default.

I know this is not what you asked for, but:

apt-cache show exim

Package: exim
[...]
Version: 3.36-18.2
[...]
Description: An obsolete MTA (Mail Transport Agent), replaced by exim4 [...]
There is no automated update path from exim 3 to exim4 since the  configuration formats are rather different. [...]

I hope you have good reasons for using exim3 otherwise upgrade to 4.

Andrei

Greetings,

I'm trying to burn an audio CD using K3b on Etch. I get the following message when I click "Burn"

K3b did not find a suitable writer. You will only be able to create an image.

Confused? Frustrated?X

The same thing happens if I try to burn as either an audio or a data project, and with any type of file. I can go ahead and burn as a .iso image.

I've looked around on the web and found several references to this problem including runnig K3b as root and changing the drive permissions under /dev. I've done both of those to no avail. I've checked that I'm in the cdrom group and that's ok also.

Any other suggestions? Perhaps I should use a different package for burning?

Debian Etch, kernel 2.6.22-2-amd64
K3b 0.12.17

Thanks,

Rob Wright

Many thanks to those who replied.

I don't know what I did wrong this time BUT it all works. :-)) Whoo=20 Hoo!

One thing I've discovered is that usernames that work in Balsa don't=20 necessarily work with SASL. I had to change some slightly to get it to=20 work.

Another thing is that one of my remote mail servers is GMail and I've=20 seen a number of Howtos for GMail all of which involve what seems to be=20 a complex procedure for creating a certificate but I saw one which said=20 just to put the following in postfix/main.cf:

# For servers (e.g. GMail) that need SSL support smtp_tls_policy_maps =3D hash:/etc/postfix/tls_policy smtp_tls_security_level =3D may

That's all I've done (I did create the tls_policy file) and it works=20 apparently without this certificate thingy.
