I have two machines connected to a Back UPS RS 800, one with a nut
server and the other a nut client, all working fine. You can find a list
of compatible UPS here : http://www.networkupstools.org/compat/

Hi, thanks for the reply. I solved it following the directions found
in the laptop-mode website FAQ:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/block_dump
which enables checking disk activity through dmesg. It turned out that
I hadn't put the "-" sign before EVERY log file name in /etc/
syslog.conf...
I took a look at noflushd, but apparently it can't handle journaling
file systems for they bypass the kernel's delayed write mechanism (*).
Oh, well, it works now anyway.
Thanks!

I've always heard people discouraging root logins or "su" and using sudo instead. I know how sudo works and how to fine-tune system access with it, but is the above suggestion in any way different or safer than a root login?

Using sudo the way Jostein suggested is just as open to problems as
logging in as root is, and should be avoided at all costs. Sudo was made
to save the user from hassle, for example, to play Wesnoth I need to
have access to the SDL framebuffer, but since you need to have root
permissions to access it I granted myself permissions just to Wesnoth.
pobega ALL=NOPASSWD /usr/games/wesnoth
And aliased in my shell:
alias wesnoth 'sudo /usr/games/wesnoth'
So when I run `wesnoth`, the framebuffer is automagically started and
I'm granted root permissions just for this one operation.
At least, that's how I think sudo should be used. I suppose you could
take ten people and they'd each find different uses for a single
program, but sudo is in NO WAY a replacement for su.

This is one possible candidate; is there a mysqld process
running?
Try running "sh -x /etc/cron.daily/logrotate". This will
print out the lines as it executes, which means the ones
near the end are the culprits.

No. Fully patched as of about an hour ago, and it starts OK. I haven't
actually played through a game, but it looks like you never see Happy

Mind you, I haven't rebooted yet...

Does it really? I always thought it didn't and that's why we have
gksu/gksudo, but I could be wrong.

Not safe is definitely what I was trying to say, not that it isn't
POSSIBLE for sudo to be used as a replacement, but it isn't a viable
solution.

Three (possible) Ways that come to mind:
1. It's my understanding that sudo commands are logged, whereas su
commands may not be. (This may be old or inaccurate information.)
2. There's the (very) slight psychological reminder that you're
potentially doing dangerous things when you have to take the extra step
of typing "sudo" before a command.
3. "sudo" automagically handles X permissions, whereas "su" does not.
Having mentioned these things, yeah, "sudo" is not a "safe" replacement
for "su".

why not=20
aptitude install courier-imap
or is there some specific reason you are installing an alien package?

You should also add 'use strict' & 'use warnings' to your perl scripts,
they're both very useful for keeping your code healthy.

You can use MIME::Lite for that, or write directly to sendmail. You
probably don't want to allow people to enter the email destination
address.

Are you sure you are asking the right list? .rpm is the
native package format for Redhat-derived distributions
(RHEL, Fedora, SUSE, Mandriver, etc.), not Debian, which
uses .deb, but rarely exposes the user to them.

If it discourages people from doing a full graphical
desktop login as root, it's better. I can't think of many
other advantages, other than the password caching
potentially discouraging people from running things as
root unnecessarily in a terminal context, too.
