I'd burn a Knoppix or Kubuntu LiveCD and boot off of it to see if it
picks up your wireless (I doubt Knoppix will; Kubuntu _might_; wireless
is generally a pain no matter what). That might give you a good feel for
how well your hardware will be supported by the newer versions of Debian.
As far as remote administration goes, ssh or remote X sessions do fine
for a lot of people. You're probably expecting to remote-control the
same desktop you'd see while sitting at the computer itself, which I
believe is possible, but I've never done. The *nix way of doing it is
usually to have a local session (X or text) and a remote session (X or
text).
Sorry I don't know off the top of my head if your wireless card will
work with Debian. If no one replies within a few hours on this list,
your best bet might be to google for your card and debian and/or linux.
Generally you're more interested in the wireless card's chipset than in
the model number and brand name.

What model is your card? Different cards from the same company may use
different chips, and that is what determines if it is supported.

For remote admin, many Linux users, including myself, use SSH (Putty
on Windows) . If you want a GUI, there are several choices, including
remote desktop, VNC, and my favorite, NX. NoMachine's NX uses the
X protocol and compresses and encrypts it.

A minimal server config would usually mean just the command line (and
SSH not Telnet). For many people getting started in Linux, that is
intimidating. You could try a minimal Window Manager, like IceWM or
Fluxbox. It really depends on what you want out of it.

The system is old. Dual PIII with 440M/B. Dual Hotswap PSU. about 730Mb E=

No problem with Hardware except wireless card. godd**n Airlink 101 card =

Then I needed Remoteadmin program like Famatech's Remote Administrator. s=

Install cryptsetup and read /usr/share/doc/cryptsetup/CryptoRoot.HowTo.
Slightly OT, but do you *really* need /boot, /usr, /bin, etc, to be
encrypted?
ISTM that only /home, /tmp & swap files/partitions (and /var?) need
be partitioned. That way, you could still boot the machine and do
maintenance if you misplaced your dongle.

I'm using a variety of consumer cases so I'm talking about the units
that slide into the CDRom bays, there are lots of them about but most
seem to do 3, 4 & 5 bay jobs that take up 2 or 3 half height drive bays
and utilise slim trays OR single drive bays that use a rugged enclosure
that isn't interchangeable with anything.

Cooldrives came up in my search as well and I could go external but for
the moment I'd rather not, our file server and my PC has 10 half height
bays (the whole front is CDRom bays) and various workstations have
between 3 and 5 bays, it just occurred to me that a lot of admin, tasks
would be so much easer if I could put any drive in any box.
Down \/ there Joe put me onto www.startech.com who have a tray less
system in 4 , 3 & 1 bay varieties which, assuming I can find them in
Singapore, will be perfect.
Thanks for you help.

Greetings all,
Recently I installed debian on a HP Compaq Presario V3646 laptop,
everything went ok, except that the brightness adjustment buttons
(Fn+F6/F7) behave strangely: if you made some brightness adjustment
in X, you have to switch to a tty and then switch back to X to make
the adjustment effective (same situation in tty, in BIOS and Windows
it is OK). Anyone experienced similar problem? problem related to
keycodes? thanks!
Cheers,

If you are reading this reply then it is evidence that Debian is not
blocking Yahoo e-mail addresses, as this is being sent from a Yahoo
address and I have been using it, and Debian lists, for several years.

Now I have, again, wrong fonts that have no antialiasing. How can I get
anitaliased fonts back? No packages had been de-installed. Just the

That works fine. The only thing when I call the opera from the command
