I filed a bugreport:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=456302
and with immediate help of the DM, Chris Waters, found the problem:
ted needs the transcoded 100dpi + 75dpi fonts which the package
apparently does not depend upon, so if they are not around, Ted does not
open anything.

If you go into /etc/logrotate.d/
there probably is a file refering to zope or squishdot in
there, its trying to rotate the logs. Just delete the file.

I recently installed the k7-SMP debian kernel and after
rebooting the ps/2 keyboard stopped working.
Remotely via ssh I can login and everything is working fine. I
then went back to the generic 386 kernel I had before and the
keyboard works fine.
There is a some convoluted history that I should mention. This
machine is a dual processsor athlon system (hence the need for
k7-SMP). The original drive in the machine died, and I
replaced it with a drive that already had a fresh install of
debian 3.1 on it.
The drive is a backup drive for some k6-2 machines I have.
They're still running 3.1. The drive had just Base installed
on it, no extra X or gnome packages, etc. These machines have
drive trays, with only the OS on /dev/hda, so if the drive
failed, I could just pop in a backup drive, edit a few config
files, apt-get a few programs and the box was back in service.
After installing the drive in the dual athlon, I updated 3.1
to the latest 3.1 (oldstable), then upgraded it to 4.0. The
upgrade went well, except it was running the default debian
kernel 2.6.8-2-386. That's when I installed the debian
2.6.18-5-k7-smp kernel, and lost my keyboard. I can boot the
previous kernel and my keyboard works.
My upgrade was:
apt pointed to oldstable:
apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade
apt pointed to stable:
apt-get update
apt-get install aptitude
(which also pulled down a new libc6, and a few others)
aptitude -f --with-recommends dist-upgrade
(hotplug was removed, and udev installed)
Rebooted, etc everything good, I then installed k7-smp and
lost the keyboard.

Done! Thanks. Hopefully that eliminates these letters my system keeps

It sounds to me like the problem here is Knoppix itself. Knoppix isn't
meant to be anything more than a live distribution of Debian, therefore
you can't expect everything to work flawlessly.=20
A proper install of Debian isn't entirely out of the question here,
especially considering how user friendly it's become since the Etch
installer even those without infinite amounts of computer know-how can
install it.

Hello. Just a while back, I switched to dialup, rather than a high
speed network connection. Before I did, I downloaded the three stable
dvds, and more recently, got the update DVD. Is it possible to
order/purchase a CD and/or DVD that has the debian multimedia, and

Hi Freddy,
I was finally able to get it working, but I'm not exactly sure what I did to fix it. I think that it might have been enabling the cgid module. Does this make sense. Otherwise, I set most of the setting back to default, restarted Apache, and the scripts starting working.

This may be a stupid question, but did you enable the cgi module by
creating a symbolic link from /etc/apache2/mods-enabled to
/etc/apache2/mods-available and install the appropriate php4/php5-cgi
package or the libapache-mod-fastcgi depending on your usage? Without
doing those two things pache won't/can't load the cgi module.
There are also some libcgi packages for perl and a couple of other
languages too, but I'm not familiar with them as I've never had occasion
to use them.

I haven't been tracking any threads on cups, so don't know whether
others have encountered this or not. Nothing seems to show up in the
archives.
I just upgraded in Sid last night and today discovered that printing was
messed up--first the printers wouldn't respond, then (after rebooting),
all I get with printing is a very black page. This happens whether from
the cups admin page, a website page, or something as simple as
dmesg | tail | lpr
from the command line.
I have an HP 1200, and am using the cups/gutenprint driver.
I have no feel for what to examine here, so am asking if anyone has
ideas about what to do next? There are no errors reported
under /var/log/cups...
Thanks,
Kenward

I've set up a Debian Etch server to deploy several monitoring tools in
my Active Directory domain. The Debian box keeps slipping further and
further behind in time. I've pointed it to my domain controller which is
configured as an NTP server and serves up time to all the Windows boxes
on the network, but I can't see to get the Debian box to sync up with
it. I've made the changes to point the ntpd to the Windows 2003 server,
but still nothing.

I had messed debian/rules all up by trying to comment lines with a # char...
I have corrected that, and now I get:
checking size of long int... configure: error: cannot compute sizeof
(long int)
See `config.log' for more details.
Also:
$ tail apache2-build/config.log

Any hints?
Thanks again!

Thanks! Yea, I have it running on another system and it seems to be stable
there. The system on which amarok hangs seems to be otherwise stable: go
figure.

Blast it all. Yes, "hplip", have it. The "Debian" submenu on the Kmenu
hasn't asserted itself yet, so I couldn't find it that way and
couldn't remember the name.
Found it, thanks to anyone who would have helped out.

Hi. Up-to-date Sid.
I had some nasty file corruption last week and had to wipe and
reinstall. I've never learned to make a reinstall of all the same
packages, so sometimes things get lost. Good thing this necessity is
so rare.
Anyway, I can't find the HP Toolkit package. My PSC2210 is defined and
working as a printer, but xsane doesn't detect it as a scanner.
I had the toolkit/toolbox/whatever it's called last week, but repeated
searches aren't turning it up under any name I can think to search
for.
Any ideas?

You can use debmirror to download the relevant portions from the
repositories.
apt-get install debmirror
debmirror --nosource --verbose --host mirrors.kernel.org --dist etch \
--method=http --section=non-free --arch=i386 --progress \
target-dir
Similarly for the multimedia repos.
