say:
I have two machines with Nvidia cards. I've tried the nv driver, and while it's perfectly adequate for general use, it won't drive the video resolution above 1024x768 (in my experience), and color depth is stuck at 16bits. Also, if you have to have TV out, using the Nvidia driver may be the only way to do that. I didn't find any way to make the nv driver activate the TV out system back when I was trying to make it work. Unfortunately, it didn't work well enough for me anyway, I expect to go to the MythTV forums when I build my TV server to find out what video-out cards work for other people. For me, the color depth, 3D acceleration, better font-size control with DPMS, and the native 1400x1050 and 1280x800 monitor resolutions are un-beatable combinations in favor of using a non-free binary driver like the Nvidia.
